An extortionist with a revolver was caught by garment workers after he shot a worker of Peacock Garments at Mirpur in the city yesterday. Injured Mohammad Sumon, was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) with a bullet wound in the chest. The extortionist, Jahidul Islam alias Raju was later handed over to police with a German-made revolver. Police later recovered four spared bullets from the spot. Witnesses said a gang of six including Raju assembled in front of the garments factory at Block-C in Section 10 at around 8:45am. Sensing their movement suspicious, Sumon and several other workers, who were unloading fabrics from a truck, approached them to know why they had gathered there. "As we asked, three of them brandished firearms and shot in the air," one worker Joynal Abedin told The Daily Star. Hearing gunshots more workers joined their colleagues and chased the six criminals. Though five of them managed to flee, Raju took shelter inside the bathroom of a nearby house in the face of chase by angry workers. As Sumon and some others attempted to grab Raju inside the bathroom, he shot once in the chest of Sumon. "Soon others jumped on Raju and caught him," Joynal said. Later police rushed to the spot and took Raju to their custody.
