12 encroachers, firms fined in Ctg

A mobile court in the port city yesterday fined 12 occupants and business firms Tk 3.15 lakh on charges of encroaching different canals, discharging wastages and disrupting their flow.The court, led by Chittagong Port Authority Magistrate (CPA) Muhammad Munir Chowdhury, found that the occupants have been disrupting the normal flow of Mohesh Khal (canal) and some other nearby canals by setting up garages, workshops and shops occupying around 18,000 square feet lands in different points of Bandar, Nimtala, Halishahar and Boropole areas. The disruption of the flow causes waterlogging during heavy rainfall in the city, sources said. The occupants were also polluting the canals dumping huge quantity of wastages, said the sources. The court also fined six other business firms for disposing wastages at the drains of Port Connecting Road in Nayabazar area. The fined occupants were Jalal Ahmed, Mohammad Rafiq, Ahmed Ali Sawdagar, Abdul Kuddus, Jakir Mian and Eskandar while the business firms were Saranika Iron Engineering Works, Gawsia Motors, Jakir Engineering Works, Nur Uddin Motors, FS Garage, Khwaja Motors and SS Garage. The name of the other business firms could not be known. The court ordered the occupants to remove the illegal structures immediately.
