'Public Hearing'
ACC boss listens to complainants

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury yesterday talked to a number of people who came to the ACC office with their problems.

Such 'public hearing' was arranged as part of the chairman's plan to hear everyday from the people being exploited or victimised by influential persons in society, said a senior ACC official.

The ACC chairman launched the 'public hearing' on July 2 as he met two visitors on the day. He talked to 12 people yesterday. From now on, he would meet the victims at 9:00am daily.

The official said most visitors lodged complaints about land disputes, which the ACC cannot settle.

The ACC chairman received the petitions from two persons -- Safina Begum of Dhigholia in Khulna and Shafiqul Islam Milon of Satkhira.

He also asked the officials to take necessary measures on the basis of the petition of Safina who complained that Abul Hashem Member grabbed her landed property.

Having failed to recover her property even after submitting appeals to different levels of the local administration for the last several years, Safina finally arrived in the ACC for a remedy.

In his petition, Shafiqul Islam Milon, on behalf of the landless people of his area, prayed for necessary measures to recover about 300 bighas of water bodies from the illegal occupation by Abdul Mazid and his accomplices.

He also said that he had to face intimidation by the police because of his stand in favour of poor local fishermen.

The ACC chairman asked a deputy director to verify the complaint and submit recommendations to the commission in this regard, ACC sources said.
