'Evict middlemen from kitchen markets'
Dhaka Metropolitan Fish and Kitchen Market Traders' Association (DMFKMT) in a statement yesterday urged the government to evict middlemen from the city's kitchen markets as a measure to check price hike of essentials. The measures government took to control prices were not effective as retailers cannot buy goods directly from the godowns. They claim that middlemen buy goods from the wholesale markets and sell those to people at a much higher rate. They also said that if the dominance of these middlemen can be stopped, prices of essentials will shrink to a reasonable rate. They suggested that measures should be taken after consultation with the godown owners, fish-producers and exporters. To cut the prices of fish, government should allow fish import from neighbouring countries, they suggested. The government also needs to strictly monitor fish exports to neighbouring countries, they added.
