5 killed in Chittagong road crash


Five people died and three others were injured when a bus ploughed through the passengers of another bus that met with an accident on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Mirersarai upazila yesterday morning.

Witnesses said a Chittagong-bound night coach of Unique Paribahan from Dhaka tilted to one side while it was taking a turn at Mithachhara Panthapukur point at about 5:30am.

"Fortunately, all the passengers managed to come out of the bus safely, says a witness to the accident.

When some of the passengers were trying to take out their luggage from the box of the tilted bus, another Chittagong-bound bus, while taking a turn at the same point, skidded off the road and ran over the passengers, killing five people on the spot and injuring three critically.

The dead were identified as Renet Gomez, 45, Kazi SM Jahangir, 50, and his daughter Kazi Samia Arefin, 15, Jiaul Huq, 40, and Nazrul Islam, 35.

The injured--Ismam Jahangir, son of SM Jahangir, Mozammel Huq and pedestrian Bibi Halima--were admitted to Mastannagar Hospital in Mirersarai upazila.

The bodies were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
