Civil society for equal application of law for Hasina
Staff Correspondent
In reaction to the arrest of Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina, civil society members yesterday said the government has to prove that everybody is equal to the law and that nobody is harassed in the legal process. "Everyone is equal to the law, but our previous experiences say it is not applied equally in all cases. The government therefore has to prove that none is above the law," said eminent economist Prof Muzaffer Ahmad. He said he believes the government has taken into account the issue of possible confrontations following the arrest of Sheikh Hasina, as she was the prime minister of the country and also is the chief of a major political party, which is well organised. "It is not expected that political leaders and activists will again engage in clashes and confrontational activities, because we want a peaceful election leading to democracy," Prof Muzaffer told The Daily Star. Former adviser to a caretaker government M Hafizuddin Khan said all must be equals to law, and the ranks of leaders should not be considered while applying the law. "Our constitution ensures equal protection for everyone," he said adding, if allegation of any crime is proven to be true, the accused must face the consequences. "Nobody however should be harassed," he said. Another former adviser to a caretaker government Dr Akbar Ali Khan declined to make any comment saying it would not be right to make comments without knowing the details of the case filed.
