Focus shifts to ODIs

Recovering from their nightmarish Test series experience is the biggest challenge facing the Bangladesh team ahead of the three-match one-day series against the World Cup finalists Sri Lanka. The Tigers have failed to achieve any positives from the three-match Test series. The 3-0 defeat was not unexpected but the way they lost all the matches simply shattered their confidence level. The humiliation is still fresh in everybody's mind but the only advantage is that some new members have been drafted into the squad lifting morale in the process -- a fact evident in the first day practice at the P Sara Stadium yesterday. The team took part in a lively fielding session in the afternoon at the ground where they will play the first ODI on Friday. Bangladesh will tune their preparations with a limited-over practise game on Wednesday against a Sri Lanka Cricket selected XI at the Nondescript Cricket Club ground. Dejected Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful said that one-day cricket is a comfort zone for them. "It is not so easy to get back the confidence after a very poor Test series but I think everything would be okay within a short time because we know about our capability in one-day cricket," he said. "We can take inspiration from our World Cup success and what is most interesting is that our players are now feeling comfortable playing the one-day game and we have the confidence of winning the one-day matches against any team," he added. But what actually made the visitors, including the skipper happiest is the fact that Sri Lanka will play the one-day series without their spin wizard Muttiah Muralidaran and left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas. The 35-year old prolific spinner emerged as slayer-in-chief for the Bangladesh batsmen by taking 26 wickets in the series to become the second bowler in the world to take 700 wickets and thus his absence brought some welcome relief in the visitor's tent. "I must say Murali is a big factor for us and you know how valuable a player Vaas also is in the one-day game, so it's a big advantage for us. But that doesn't mean that without two players Sri Lanka are weaker opponents. They are now the second ranked team because they have some quality back-up players," he explained. "And don't forget that player like (Sanath) Jayasuriya will join the team for the one-day competition," he warned. The run drought from the top order was a real concern for the new Bangladesh skipper but he was also worried with his bowlers performance in the just concluded Test series."It's nice that Tamim (Iqbal) joined us because he is in good form since the World Cup but our other top order batsmen should play their role if we want to finish the series at a high note. In Test matches our main target is to survive but the case is totally different in the one-day game where we go for the win. And that's why bowlers also should give their best," he explained. In Sri Lanka, a healthy contingent of people recall Bangladesh's World Cup adventure with fond memories and Ashraful believes that it is now their responsibility to enhance their reputation in the shorter-version game.
