Exhibition of clothes designed by Chakmas begins

With a view to promoting designs of Chakma community, Nogordola, a concern of Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM), is organising a month-long exhibition of clothes suitable for rainy season in the city.A three-day Mehedi Festival was also held in collaboration with Mumtaz's Herbal in this connection. Women activist Maleka Begum inaugurated the exhibition at Nogordola office in the city yesterday. Speaking at the programme, she said although the Chakma community is a minority, it is a part of the national culture. The exhibition aims at highlighting the cultural tradition of the Chakma community. President of DAM Kazi Rafiqul Islam hoped people would appreciate the blending of Chakma trends with the contemporary ones. Ethnic handloom textile promoter Manjulika Chakma said that the designs of the clothes were taken from the traditional textile designs of Chakma community called 'ALAM'. For this exhibition, Nogordola selected 16 designs of ALAM for the rainy season, said the organisers. General Secretary of Dhaka Ahsania Mission Md Ziauddin, Vice-President of Women for Women Pervin Ahmed and Consultant (design and product development) Chandra Shekhar Shaha were also present.
