But Blake battled back to knot the set, broke Goldstein in the next game then served out the match.

Blake, ranked ninth in the world, next faces American Vince Spadea, celebrated his 33rd birthday by posting a comeback win over 2006 finalist Dmitry Tursunov.

Spadea, who was presented with a birthday cake on court following his match, beat the fifth-seeded Russian 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals for the seventh time this season.

Local Zack Fleishman continued his unlikely run with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 victory over Robert Kendrick to reach his first career ATP quarterfinal.

Fleishman, 27, had notched his first career Top 10 victory in opening round action by stunning world number six and top seed Fernando Gonzalez.

He next faces Czech Radek Stepanek, who cruised past sixth seed and wild card entrant Mardy Fish 6-2, 6-2.

Third-ranked Marat Safin already advanced to the quarterfinals by outlasting Switzerland's George Bastl, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, in two hours Wednesday night.

Safin will face Lee Hyung-Taik of South Korea in the quarterfinals.

The other quarterfinal is an all-German matchup between unseeded Nicolas Kiefer and Michael Berrer.
