Art works on a distinctive paper

Ten contemporary artists were invited to work on a newly imported paper from UK, "Conqueror". The results are on display at an ongoing exhibition at the Bengal Gallery. The participating artists include Abir Abdullah (photographer), Hasan Saifuddin Chandan (photographer), Ronni Ahmed (painter), Sajjad Sharif (poet), Dhruba Esh (designer), Marina Tabussum (architect), Saidul Haque Juise (mask maker), Khaled Mahmud (designer) and Salahuddin Ahmed (architect).

The exhibition was inaugurated by Spain-based Bangladeshi artist Monirul Islam. This is an event to project the variety and multiplicity of the paper which can be used for many purposes such as graphic designing, stationery and invitation. Farzeen Chowdury, spokesperson for "Conqueror" said that the usage of the paper sets it apart from others.

Monirul Islam said, "The exhibition is significant as it is the first time a paper company is promoting art forms. The country does not yet produce quality paper. Artists depend on paper bought overseas. Because of our humid weather and monsoon, art work is often easily and quickly spoilt if not completely destroyed."

Artist Monirul Islam informed that a Spanish art critic Carmen Garrigies told him that the paper can outlast canvas if it is properly preserved. He stressed on the different usage of the paper -- from making cards to using it for professional art work.

Shishir Bhattachaya said that since the exhibition includes other creative workers apart from artists, the multi dimensional project is unique.

Khaled Mahmud, speaking about his work said that it is basically in mixed media. Computer has been used for the execution of photography. "My background is print making," Khaled said. The work looks like digital art but has been made from a four-coloured printing machine. He introduces a Christ-like bearded mystic face, looking up into eternity. There are words written around him and finally there is a pink swirl all around. This is on a silver grey paper which can be a challenge for artists. The work includes photography, press and computer work.

Hasan Saifuddin Chandan said that one of his photographs was taken in 1985 and is in black and white. The architectural designs are of buildings from a past era. In the series, "Abstracts of declining architecture" one finds another image from the distant past and this is of Goaldi Mosque in Sonargaon, which is over 100 years old. The camera focuses on a root of a tree that has been torn asunder. The photographer stresses on our own lost roots.

Paper Studio's introduction of the new brand of paper has been welcomed by artists of all levels.

The exhibition ends on July 22.
