Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed yesterday welcomed and assured his government's full support for holding the first regional conference of World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) in Dhaka November 5-6 this year. The CA gave the assurance when a delegation of WIEF, led by its chairman and former deputy prime minister of Malaysia Tun Musa Hitam, made a courtesy call on him at his office and sought Bangladesh's support to the two-day conference. Hitam briefed the CA about the upcoming WIEF conference, saying business delegations from Muslim and non-Muslim countries are expected to participate in the conference where Bangladesh business community will get opportunity to showcase their business potentials. He said the European Union (EU) and South Africa also showed interest to participate in the WIEF meet. The CA termed the WIEF a good forum and said the conference will open the windows of business opportunities as well as business challenges for the Southeast Asia region. It will be a win-win situation for trade and investment in respect of capital and cheap labour force, he added. The head of the caretaker government hoped that the regional conference would be effective in exchanging views and exploring business possibilities in the region. He stressed the need for proper utilisation of resources in the region. The WIEF emerged under the umbrella of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) through its first meeting in 2005 in Kuala Lumpur. Earlier, in 2003, it was formed as OIC Business Forum. The third meeting of WIEF was held in May 2007.
