Poverty

I was reading in newspaper the other day that in India a newborn baby was found in a field when a farmer was plowing the soil, the child was still alive as God saved it. The child's poor mother buried him or her alive because of poverty.

Another shocking news I read in the Guardian, Monday 9 July, 2007, that a 16-year old Afghan girl was sold by his father to repay the loan for buying nine sheep. This is really inhuman. The root cause of this kind of immoral action is also poverty.

Saddened by these two stories I am thinking about the poor people of my country affected by floods, cyclones, and river- erosion every year and deprived by a few corrupt people gobbling up everything. More than 45% of the people in Bangladesh live below poverty line. The definition of poverty line is the minimum amount of income that a family needs for food, clothing, shelter, and other necessities.

As the world's most densely populated country we should think about how to alleviate poverty.
