Sylhet Grenade Attack
Charges against 4 to be framed tomorrow

The District and Sessions Judge's Court will frame charges tomorrow against the four accused of grenade attack on British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury on the premises of Hajrat Shahjalal's shrine on May 21, 2004.

The accused are outlawed Harkatul Jihad chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, his brother Mofizur Rahman alias Muhib and Huji operatives Delwar Hossain Ripon and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul. All the four are now in custody.

On July 12, the court shifted the date for charge framing to July 29 as the accused Mofizur Rahman could not be produced before the court.

Three people were killed and 70 others, including the British envoy, injured in the grenade attack after Juma prayers. The dead were identified as Habibur Rahman Habib, Zobayer Ahmed Rubel and assistant sub-inspector of the Special Branch Kamal Uddin.

Sylhet Kotwali police filed a case on the day of incident. The case was later transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as police failed to find clues to the attack.

Munshi Atiqur Rahman, senior ASP of the CID, filed two charge-sheets--one under Explosives Act and the other for killing--with the Sadar Magistrate's Court.

On June 26 this year, the magistrate court sent the case records and charge sheets to the District and Sessions Judge's Court for trial.
