Sania, Peer advance

Sania Mirza and Olga Govortsova posted upsets here Thursday to book their quarterfinal berths in the 600,000-dollar WTA Bank of the West Classic.

Govortsova, of Belarus, ousted fifth-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to set up a meeting with third-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova.

The 18-year-old qualifier said she was benefiting from playing more matches.

"I think that I am improving now because I play a lot of matches regularly, every day against good players," said Govortsova, who beat Colombian Catalina Castano in the first round. "Last year, I did not really do very well but now I have beaten some good players and have confidence."

"It has been a hard week, and I haven't been playing well" said Peer, who had to dig out of a first-set hole to get past Camille Pin in the first round. "Now I have to work hard to get back to form."

Mirza sent sixth-seeded Tatiana Golovin of France packing.

Mirza, who reached the semifinals in Cincinnati last week, defeated Golovin 6-4, 6-1.
