An employee of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall of Rajshahi University (RU), who was also a former cadre of Islamic Chhatra Shibir (ICS), was arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Wednesday night in connection with the attacks on four journalists on Sunday. Sources said Mokarram Abdullah Moni was arrested from Binodpur area of the campus. Four journalists were assaulted and two of them kept confined for three hours to provost's room when they went there to collect information whether the Shibir cadres were enlisting the names of the students as voters. On Tuesday, three assaulted journalists filed general diaries (GD) separately with Motiher Police Station in connection with the attacks on them. Abdullah Iqbal, photojournalist of the daily Jugantor, Meherul Hasan Sujon of the daily Samakal and Salauddin Muhammad Sumon of the Bhorer Kagoj filed the GDs seeking security of their life. Another assaulted journalist was Johaer Ibne Kalim, RU correspondent of the daily Jugantor. Meanwhile, the provost of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall has formed a five-member committee to investigate the matter. But RU journalists rejected the committee saying that all the members of the probe committee, headed by Prof Mahmudul Alam, are pro-Jamaat teachers. Provost Prof Nurul Islam said the committee has begun its investigation. In a statement, Progressive Teachers Society (PTS) backed by Awami League has expressed its grave concern over the incident. The statement said Shibir cadres are still continuing their criminal activities on the campus with the support of the administration. The PTS demanded legal action against the Shibir cadres.
