Moeen again rules out army's role in politics

Army chief Gen Moeen U Ahmed yesterday again ruled out the army's involvement in politics, saying that major task before the nation is to give succour to the flood victims.Talking to reporters after visiting the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B), he said he has repeatedly dismissed the speculations in the past about the army's involvement in politics. In support of his contention, Gen Moeen quoted from Rabindranath Tagore's short story Jibito o Mrito, "Kadombini moriya proman korilo she more nai [by dying Kadombini proved that she had not died]." He reiterated that it is not the time to do politics, but to ensure food and medicine for the flood victims. The army chief said army doctors and ambulances would be engaged for treatment of the flood victims and those suffering from diarrhoea. He also said arrangements are being made to shift some diarrhoea patients to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) to ease off pressure from the ICDDR,B. Besides, he said they are contemplating making temporary arrangements at Haji camp to treat the patients. He thanked the doctors of ICDDR,B for providing proper treatment to the patients. DGMS Director General Maj Gen M Abdul Muyeed Siddique and senior officials of ICDDR,B were present on the occasion.
