4 new UGC members appointed

The government yesterday appointed four educationists as members of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the next four years.The new appointments are being seen as part of the ongoing reform of UGC, said education officials and UGC sources. The newly appointed members are professors Amena Begum from Department of Physics, Dhaka University, Tazul Islam from Department of Economics, Jahangirnagar University, Zihadul Karim from Department of Anthropology, Rajshahi University, and Abdul Hakim from Department of Political Science, Chittagong University. The new members will take office on August 15, UGC sources said. They will be replacing the members who resigned from UGC recently following requests received from the education ministry. The members who stepped down are professors Faisul Islam Farouqui, M Mahbub Ullah, Sultan Hossain and Tareque Shamsur Rahman. Education Secretary M Momtazul Islam on July 30 called the four UGC members over phone and asked them to resign. The resignation of three UGC members--Prof Mahbub, Prof Tareque and Prof Sultan--will be effective from August 15. Prof Farouqui's resignation took effect on July 31.
