Delivery of verdict resumes today

The High Court Death Reference Bench on Shazneen murder case resumes delivering its verdict today regarding the appeal of the convicts against the lower court's death penalty.The bench comprising Justices Ali Asgar Khan and Emdadul Haque will today analyse the statements of four of the 22 prosecution witnesses and the lower court judgement. The witnesses are Fakhruzzaman, head of law at Transcom Group, Metropolitan Magistrate Maksudur Rahman Patwari, recording officer Enamul Haq and Shahidur Rahman. The bench will later deliver its judgement about the appeal against the death sentence pronounced by the Second Special Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Children Repression, Dhaka on September 2, 2003. Shazneen Tasnim Rahman, the youngest daughter of leading industrialist Latifur Rahman and also a IX student of Scholastica, was raped and killed at her Gulshan residence on April 23, 1998. After the court awarded capital punishment to all the six accused of the crime, the convicts later appealed with the High Court against the judgement. They are Shahidul Islam Shahid, a domestic help, Syed Sajjad Mainuddin Hasan, a contractor for repairing works at Shazneen's house, his assistant Badal, carpenter Shaniram Mondol and housemaids Estema Khatun Minu and Parvin. The death reference bench heard the submission of both the prosecution and the defence during a 31-workday hearing that ended on June 27. Beginning the delivery of its judgement on July 5, the bench scrutinised the first information report (FIR) filed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (Criminal Investigation Department) Mojibur Rahman and statements of three witnesses. It analysed statements of another 15 the following day.
