Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday stressed the need for selection of honest, efficient, patriotic and professional officers for promotion to the senior level of the army."The army not only carries out defence responsibilities in the present-day world. The area of their responsibilities has enlarged and multidimensionality added," she said inaugurating the meeting of 'Army Selection Board 2006' at the Army Headquarters in Dhaka. "You will give promotion to the officers on the basis of their seniority efficiency, eligibility and merit following the set guidelines," she told the army high-ups attending the meeting. The prime minister, who is also holds the portfolio of defence ministry, hoped that the selection board members will take decisions on promotion after minute analysis of overall qualifications of each officer on the basis of justice and rising above anger, favour and personal liking or disliking. "We have introduced a balanced policy for promotion in the armed forces. I hope this will establish parity with three services so far as promotion is concerned," she said. Khaleda said the patriotic army of the country was organised through the War of Liberation and it has earned wide recognition as a high standard force at home and abroad. "I think this has enhanced your responsibilities. Therefore, importance will have to be laid on merit, workability, consciousness and prudence of the officers while selecting future leadership of the force." Advising the army officers to be responsible towards their subordinates and respectful towards their seniors, the PM said, "Our goal is a professional army and we want professional officers for this purpose." Referring to multifarious activities of the army, she said besides protecting independence and sovereignty of the country, they are also standing by the people during natural calamities, taking part in development activities and making contributions to UN peacekeeping missions. She also refereed to the reputation of army personnel in curbing terrorism through active contribution to the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and said they will have to develop themselves as more efficient and enhance professionalism to uphold this reputation and glory.
