AS Mahmud's 72nd birthday today

Today is the 72nd birth anniversary of AS Mahmud, founding managing director of the Mediaworld Limited and the first publisher of The Daily Star.He was also the founder chairman and CEO of the now defunct Ekushey Television (ETV) Limited, the first private television channel of the country. A graduate in Economics from Dhaka University, Mahmud studied International Advanced Management Programme at IMEDA in Lusanne, Switzerland and Advanced Marketing Management Programme at International Marketing Institute, USA. He served as the chairman of Philips Bangladesh Limited and Reliance Insurance Limited and as the director of Infrastructure Development Company and Transcom Limited. Mahmud also served as the president of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), director of Janata Bank, sponsor director of Brac Bank Limited. He was also a member of National Pay Commission, Industrial Development Council of the government, Rotary Club of Dhaka, Brac governing body and Board of Trustees of Al-Nahian Trust. Following the 2001general elections, ETV was closed down through a court order. He went to London later with his family, where he lived till his death on January 22, 2004.
