Verdict in graft case against Ershad Aug 17

A Dhaka court yesterday for the third time fixed a new date for the delivery of judgment in a corruption case against former president HM Ershad for illegal withdrawal of income tax money.

On completion of arguments from the prosecution and the defence, judge of the Special Court, Dhaka Division Malik Abdullah Al Amin fixed August 17 for the verdict. Ershad was present in the court.

Earlier, the same court fixed the date for the delivery of judgment twice.

But the court deferred the date for judgment when the defence lawyers in September 2003 stated that their client would not get justice from the court. Then it was deferred again in July 2004 due to illness of the judge.

In the case filed with Ramna Police Station, it was alleged that Ershad, while in power, paid Tk 7,43,416 as income tax for six years (1983-1989). Later, he withdrew Tk 2,76,324 from the income tax money without submitting any documents in favour of his action.

The now-defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption filed a corruption case accusing Ershad and three tax officials on July 27, 1992.

The investigation officer however submitted charge sheet against Ershad as the lone accused on December 19, 1992. The court framed charges against him on January 26, 1994 and the trial began on June 26, 2003.
