No solace for Bangladesh

Bangladesh conceded a 2-0 defeat to hosts Hong Kong at the Mongkok Stadium yesterday to end their 2007 Asian Cup qualifying campaign without a single win.

Bangladesh made the trip to Hong Kong mostly with under-23 booters in a bid to give the youngsters exposure ahead of the Asian Games.

But Hasanuzzaman Babloo's hopes to repeat the performance of their last trip to the former British colony four years ago -- when they drew 2-2 with the home side in the same tournament -- was shattered as they had to play the last 17 minutes without goalkeeper and captain Aminul, who was sent-off.

In a miserable run, Bangladesh conceded 19 goals in six matches having scored just one, against Qatar at home.

Hong Kong made a sterling attempt to upset the odds and gain unlikely progress to the finals but in the end their victory against the ten-man opposition proved inconsequential.

A brace from Guy Ambassa ensured the hosts finished with a well-deserved victory but Uzbekistan's 2-0 win over group winners Qatar meant they took second place in Group F.

Hong Kong needed to win by a large margin to stand any chance of qualification whilst also relying on Uzbekistan losing their game against Qatar.

Bangladesh have suffered heavily at the hands of Hong Kong before when the South Asians won 9-1 in Malaysia in 1975.

But despite what was at stake for the home side, chances were few and far between in the opening exchanges with the first real effort on goal not arriving until the 26th minute, Emily heading over for the visitors.

The hosts enjoyed superior possession but were proving wasteful in the final third and they should have done better with a freekick in a promising position 10 minutes before the break.

But they started getting closer and Wong Chun Yue glanced a header just wide of the post before they finally made the breakthrough they needed just before the break when Guy Ambassa rose to head home from a cross.

The second period started much the same as the first as the hosts continued to dominate but without finding away to trouble Aminul.

In the 64th minute Chan Siu Kei broke well down the left wing but he sent his cross too close to the goalkeeper. The impressive Ambassa soon made a great run but Aminul did well to save the goalbound shot.

Hong Kong were awarded a penalty in the 73rd minute when Chan went down under the challenge of the goalkeeper and the referee pointed to the spot.

Aminul was shown the red card and Ambassa coolly stepped up to send the spotkick beyond substitute custodian Himel.

But there were to be no more goals after that despite Hong Kong's best efforts as they finished their Group F Qualifying campaign in third place, three points behind Uzbekistan.

Hong Kong had beaten Bangladesh 1-0 in Dhaka in the second round.

The match also proved to be the last international appearance for Bangladesh striker Alfaz Ahmed, who had announced his retirement from international footballer after wearing the national colours for 11 years.
