10 hurt in Comilla BNP-AL clash during hartal
At least 10 people were injured in a clash between the activists BNP and Awami League in Homna upazila of Comilla during a daylong hartal enforced by main opposition BNP.
Local BNP called dawn-to-dusk hartal in Pabna and Bhola districts, two upazilas each of Noakhali and Comilla, and Pallabi in the capital protesting the arrest of the party's five senior leaders.
The hartal supporters also vandalised at least 50 business establishments and blasted three crude bombs in Pabna town at noon.
Nine vehicles were also vandalised in Bhola in the morning.
BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Rafiqul Islam Miah were arrested yesterday night, hours after the party-led opposition alliance announced a 72-hour countrywide hartal from Sunday.
Law enforcers also detained BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo and Special Assistant Shimul Biswas and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Vice-President Anwar Hossain Tipu early today.
COMILLA
Local BNP called daylong hartal in Titas and Homna upazilas, the constituency of MK Anwar.
Hartal activists brought out a procession in Homna upazila around 10:30am, said Aslam Shikdar, officer-in-charge of Homan Police Station.
As the ruling party men resisted the BNP men, they locked into a clash with the AL men.
Mahfuzul Islam, president of the upazila unit BNP, claimed that 10 to 12 of their party men were injured during the clash, reports our Comilla correspondent.
Police fired several rounds of teargas canisters to disperse the clashing groups.
PABNA
District BNP called the hartal protesting arrest of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Special Assistant Shimul Biswas, said Zahurul Islam, office secretary of the district unit BNP.
The hartal supporters went on rampage around noon on Abdul Hamid road in the town and vandalised at least 50 establishments including shops and banks there.
The BNP men also hurled three crude bombs at the district Awami League office in the town, reports our Pabna correspondent quoting witnesses.
BHOLA
Pro-hartal activists vandalised nine battery-run auto-rickshaws at Kalikhola and Alia Madrasa area in the district town around 6:00am, reports our district correspondent.
NOAKHALI
Local BNP called a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Companyganj and Kabirhat upazilas, the parliamentary constituency of Moudud.
Pro-hartal activists were seen picketing at different areas setting fire to tyres of the two upazilas.
