5 cops hurt in Comilla, Jhenidah Shibir attack
At least five policemen were injured as the activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir attacked the law enforcers in Comilla and Jhenidah towns during their countrywide demonstration programme Thursday morning.
Three constables were hurt in Comilla while two in Jhenidah when the activists of Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, swooped on the law enforcers, report our correspondents.
They were demonstrating in the district towns as part of the organisation's countrywide programme demanding release of their leaders including Delwar Hossain, president of Shibir.
In Comilla, the clash ensued between the Shibir men and police around 10:15am when the law enforcers tried to disperse a procession of Shibir at the city's Chakbazar area, said Shamsuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
During the clash, the Shibir men swooped on policemen with wooden sticks and also hurled brick chips, leaving three constables injured.
The chases and counter-chases also took place during the clash when the police tried to take the situation under control, the police official added.
In Jhenaidha, Shibir activists brought out a procession at Hater-Rasta in the town around 9:45am, said Kazi Jalal Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jhenaidha Sadar Police Station.
As police tried to disperse the procession, the Shibir activists hurled brick chips at the law enforcers and two constables were injured in the attack, the OC said.
Police had to fire two blank shots to bring the situation under control, he added.
On March 31, a team of Detective Branch of police arrested Delwar from his sister’s house at Shyamoli in the capital for his alleged involvement in recent countrywide violence and attacks on police.
