Some facts about DU admission
Tazmia Islam Nion
University of Dhaka is a multi-disciplinary university and is among the top universities in the region with students studying in various departments and institutions. The University of Dhaka is the largest public university in Bangladesh. It is the only university in Bangladesh to have been listed in Asia Week's listing of top universities in Asia.
However, University of Dhaka has to cope up with many problems. Dhaka University remains closed for indefinite period, examinations are postponed due to unavoidable circumstances, class schedules are not maintained and teachers are more willing to take class at private universities. Most of the time academic rules and regulations are overlooked, and results are not published in time.
Despite all these it is still the beacon of education in Bangladesh with reputed teachers and a glorious past that attracts the students and their guardians.
Dhaka University has started the distribution of admission form for "KA","KHA", "GA"and "GHA" unit.
“KA” unit is for the science students,”KHA” for Arts, “GA” for the commerce students and “GHA” for the group who wish to change their subjects.
The entire campus wears a look of festivity when the admission process is in action.
You can imagine how mind numbing it can be to wait in a long queue for hours. However, the smiling faces of the students indicate that they are having fun; they are enjoying the environment and eagerly waiting to be a part of this University.
Since they have an alternative choice for enrolling themselves into private universities, so what are the specialties that inspire them to get admitted in this university, which currently has so many problems?
Star Campus talked with some of the students who are waiting to be enrolled into Dhaka University and here are some of their comments.
"After passing from the restricted college life whenever we think about university, pictures of large premises come into our mind. University life, the taste of freedom, these are the ingredients that make up Dhaka University. It's like a dream come true!!!-Said Tonima
"Everyone wants to get admitted into a university that has a good atmosphere for education, which will help them to have good academic education and also induce values and skills that will make them a honest, patriotic individual. A nice campus with adequate resources and facilities are also important as it helps the students to excel in practical life. I believe that in spite of all the negative things, Dhaka University is still the best educational institution in Bangladesh.- said Choyon .
To Chaity University means only Dhaka University. She is very excited to be a part of Dhaka University and keeps her fingers crossed for getting the admission. “As far I know teachers of the university are taking class in the private universities, so why should I go for any private university?"
Session jam is another problem but the students are not much concerned about this, especially those in commerce group, since in the semester system of education this problem can be solved.
As far as we are concerned the education that private universities are providing is not standard at all, except for a few. Another question is that private universities are too expensive for most students.
