Aiesec's first national conference on exchange (nxc 2007)

Syeda Sabita Amin

Recognized by the United Nations as the largest student organization in the world, AIESEC offers 5000 leadership opportunities on local, national, and international level to its 22,000 members annually. AIESEC offers over 5000 leadership opportunities each year to facilitate the Global Internship Program, which sees the exchange of over 4000 students each year to live and work in another country. By providing the international platform for young people to discover and develop their potential to have positive impact on society, AIESEC's members are offered unparallel experiences for leadership development.

The two-day conference was held at Eastern Residence in Banani on 25th and 27th January and AIESECers from the foul local committees (AIUB, BU, IUB and NSU) were present to witness the first ever conference in Bangladesh based on Exchange.

The conference gave AIESEC members an opportunity to learn about exchanges over the last few years in Bangladesh and abroad. Members also got to ask questions and listen to senior members such as local committee vice presidents and current president of AIESEC Bangladesh Daniel Rahman, about their experiences concerned with exchange.

I was a member of the Organizing Committee and my other members and I organized everything in the venue to the arrangements for meals, sessions, presentations, etc.

All in all the conference was a success and it was great because members always can look up exchanges online but to hear about experience is something totally different! This may have been the first conference, but it's certainly not going to be the last!

Choose your career properly

Shahriar Kabir (Rana)

Choosing the right career is one of the most important tasks for a student. But in our country most students fail to do so and suffer after they have entered the job arena. I think a student should choose a subject of higher studies according to his/her ability and interest in the subject. However, our students go for a subject by assessing the demand for that subject in the industry. Their parents and friends also play a vital role in this choice, but in the long run only the ill-fated student has to pay for it. Because this is the age of specialization and only students with the highest level of competence in and fascination for any subject can survive in this fierce battle. So before choosing the subject of your higher studies, you should think and think again about it. Every year a lot of students in our country pass with good GPAs, but most of them cannot do justice to their merit. People may come up with many reasons, but I would attribute it to failure in choosing the right career. Towards this aspect, I would like to give some suggestions for choosing the right career.

First of all, enquire about the subject you are going to be enrolled in. Talk to people who are already studying this subject, discuss about all basic skills, traits and competencies required to be successful in the subject, try to know about the career opportunities, try to guess about the future aspects. It is very important to also keep in mind whether you enjoy the subject or not. For example, if you are a BBA student and are good at mathematics you can choose finance as your major, if you like interacting people and have a streak of creativity, you can choose marketing. I can assure you that considering your behavioral trait while choosing your career will give you a competitive edge in the job arena. Lastly a disclaimer, I am not an HRM specialist. The ideas I presented in this article are solely based on my observation and perception. Good luck to the students who are getting admitted in university this year.
