Trimatrik @ BRAC University

Mahdin Mahboob

At BRAC University, we always tend to do think out of the box when organizing events, and the Club Fair of Fall, 2007 was no exception! Rightfully named Trimatrik (which means 3-D or three-dimensional) in Bengali, this event saw the active participation of all the clubs and forums of BU in a 2 day long event which also included movie shows and a rocking concert.

For the freshmen students, who happen to be the main target of all the clubs and forums, 30th May was just another day at the university. A warm and humid day at that! But little did they know that it would be a fun-filled day, the first of many that they will get to enjoy during their four years of study in BRAC. Organized by the BUFC (BRAC University Film Club) this time, Trimatrik (the name being chosen on the basis of votes), kicked off in the morning with our honourable Vice Chancellor Dr. Jamilur Reza Chowdhury cutting the filmstrip at the entrance of the indoor games room, which was the venue of the event. The Vice Chancellor, together with some other members of the BRAC University governing board and some faculty members, looked around the fair after that, preceding one by one to see the brief presentations of all the clubs. The fair had a panel of three judges to rank the performances of the different clubs and the panel was headed by none other than our Pro-VC Dr. Saleh Uddin Ahmed. The judges were awarded with different gifts from all the clubs and they also made comments on the guest book of the fair.

After the visit of the VC and the judges, the club fair was opened to all and the whole venue got crowded with students, especially the Freshmen. Every club and forum seemed determined on making the best impression by explaining their activities to the curious students. Most of the Freshers showed tremendous enthusiasm and as a result, very eagerly joined the clubs that they wanted to or were impressed by. Almost all the clubs had various gifts or lotteries for the registering members. The BRAC University Film Club seemed to have the best bargain, and they gave away Audio CDs to all the newly registering members as a sign of appreciation! A game show was organized by the BRAC University Computer Club with students from different departments bagging away the first, second and third prizes.

A cultural show was held in the late afternoon with many students of the university performing at the show much to the enjoyment of the audience. Later in the day, popular bands from BRAC University, Scarecrow and Alternation performed at the show. Shafin(Lead Guitar) and Tanvir (Guitar and Vocals) from Scarecrow, Turjo(Drums) from Reborn and Shabab(Bass) from Cynic-X , all students of BU, teamed up to play popular numbers like My Sacrifice (Creed), Like a Stone(Audio Slave),The Wall (Pink Floyd), Knocking on Heaven's Door(Guns n Roses) and Entersandman(Metallica). But the guest band, SHIRONAMHIN stole the show with their hit numbers ending with their famous song HASHI MUKH. Day one thus ended with a splendid note.

Day 2, 31st May was reserved for the Film Shows. Three movies, 'The Bourne Identity', 'Mr. Bean's Holiday' and 'Rang De Basanti' were screened in the show. This show, with a huge big screen and superb quality sound, was solely arranged by BUFC. However, Mr. Bean's Holiday seemed to draw the highest number of people, with almost every nook and corner of the venue filling up during its screening! Radio Foorti gave away T-shirts to the audience while Starship provided the juice packs.

All in all, the Club Fair was a big success in all aspects, achieving its goals, providing fun for everyone at the same time. The sponsors for the event were Boishakhi TV, Nescafe, Starship and Radio Foorti. Special thanks to Raied Hasan, Shabab Zaman and Ahsan for providing me with all the relevant information and the pictures for the different events.
