Campus Rockers
Ionic: A Young NSU Band in the Making

Elita Karim

The latest craze in NSU today is Ionic. Students belonging to different disciplines, Ionic has been making for the last 5 years or so, even though experimenting with it and listening to loads of artistes both home and abroad had begun at a very early stage. An alternative band, Ionic is well-known on campus and is usually rocking up campus rock shows and cultural events. The members of the band are also seen just jamming with a whole bunch of students during class breaks at the NSU cafeteria, the very famous BTA 101, or any place where they can settle down with a guitar and some fun-loving audience.

Like every other aspiring band, Ionic is also trying to make it big in the music arena of Dhaka. Their first song “Kolpona” which was released in Shopnochura 1 was a soft number with an alternative touch to it. According to the band, they have been trying to create 'catchy' numbers to get hold of a large section of the young crowd, but of course with a difference in the compositions. Our second single “Notun Din” was released in Shopnochura 3 which, a true blue alternative composition.

Line up:
Sunny- Guitars, Keys Programming and Vocals
Raihan- Guitars
Toufiq- Bass
Rafi- Drums

Ionic feels that it is unfortunate that the alternative music scene is slowly fading away in the country, as new genres take over. To keep the feel alive, the band is now working on their first album and is constantly experimenting with all kinds of new sounds. Besides alternative numbers, the band is also shifting towards melodious rhythms. They believe that what they are producing at the moment is not what you would find in the conventional 'underground' music scene in the country, they say. Some of their new tracks are Kichukhon, Shopno, Mrittu, Icche, Onubhuti which will be releasing very soon.

Moving away from the familiar crowds of NSU, Ionic has performed at the Russian Cultural Centre, Nazrul Institute, Buet and several school and college reunion shows.
