International Coastal Cleanup 2007 Cox's Bazar Cleaned Out!

Campus Desk

On the 14th of August Banglalink sponsored the International Coastal Cleanup 2007 in Bangladesh. It was truly a day to remember as everyone from little children to adults came together to clean Cox's Bazar. the event started at 10:00 in the morning as all the volunteers lined up for the customary photo shoot. It was an amazing mix of individuals from first graders to senior men from the Department of Environment. After the cameras finished their work then came a small procession from the beach front on to the main beach itself. It was a stiflingly hot day but the brave volunteers kept their cool throughout it all. Just when one though the pictures were over everyone had to set up for one last group picture to be taken on the beach, it turned out to be worth the weight as the picture was brilliant. Next it was down to the nitty gritty of the event, cleaning the coast, which in this case happened to be the wonderful beaches of Cox's Bazar. All the Volunteers were handed plastic bags and rubber gloves and then were sent to do their work. They collected every conceivable piece of rubbish and within a few hours almost the entire beach was cleaned out. The fact that volunteers braved the heat and exhaustion was definitely praiseworthy as was the fact that this was all done on the first day of Ramadan. The event proved to be a huge success with Banglalink definitely deserving most of the kudos. One hopes it will be repeated next year and every year after that, here's hoping to more successful International Coastal Cleanup's in the future. This year Cox's Bazar was cleaned out!
