Independence: Tears and Smiles
Mohammad Shafiqul Islam
FREEDOM fighters dreamt of a Bangladesh where there would not be any discrimination between the poor and the rich, where people would live in peace treating one another as brother, sister, where corruption would be considered as sin, where there would be no crisis of food, clothes, shelter, medicine and education, where every person would feel safe at home. Bangladesh would be placed in a prestigious position in the global arena. But what have we seen so long?
There are a lot of instances in the world that a country has to pass through some critical times for various reasons like war, famine, natural calamities etc. But the countries recover from the problems soon and change rapidly. We the people in Bangladesh saw the complete opposite picture these long years. We, though a brave nation, could not stand straight as an economically prosperous, technologically powerful, politically peaceful and socially stable country. Healthy economic condition is a prerequisite to all other developments - technological, political, social etc.
Social stability is a great factor for which a country is categorised as a reliable, secure and progressive country. Law and order situation can be maintained well only in a socially and politically stable country. We have experienced a lot of occasions in which lawmakers violated laws which led to countrywide shutdown. The whole country had been blocked days after days for the nonchalance of these so called lawmakers.
We no more want such villains in power. Many honest and good politicians had to lay down their lives under the clutch of these people , the ones who betrayed the simple, poor people of our country, who stole the resources of the helpless people, who rigged votes to grab power.
The so-called political leaders of our golden Bangladesh since post-liberation war made this country uninhabitable for the honest people. These political leaders tried hard and fast to grab the power in any possible way even at the cost of valuable lives of the country. They earned black money to gain the position of MPs, Ministers etc. Going to power they tortured anyone opposing their views. These people do not have the right to go to power because only for them our country got the top position as the most corrupt country of the world five times consecutively. They do not have any patriotism rather they satisfy themselves to the fullest throwing the national interest into the dustbin.
The masked politicians filled their own stomach with the poor people's food. They acquired land, food and other property of the state forgetting the future of Bangladesh and the Bangladeshis. They even bought villas abroad with millions of dollars taken away from our own motherland. They had plans to take shelter in those villas at difficult times to avoid arrest. But the present government did not give them time to leave the country.
Anyone walking down the rural roads will see the distressed condition of the hard working people of Bangladesh. What a struggling life they are leading! Their roads turn dangerous during the rainy seasons. The faces of these deprived villagers should generate sympathy in the hearts of the so called politicians, lawmakers, ministers and rich traders of the country. Unfortunately it is seen that these people have lost all feelings.
In 1971, people from all walk of life spontaneously participated in the war with the great expectations. They highly expected that after the liberation they would enjoy the freedom of economy, freedom of food, freedom of speech, right to work and right to safety. But much of it remains to be materialised as yet.
The most disappointing is to see the anti-liberation forces of 1971 in power in post-liberation Bangladesh. The governments which were in power in last 25 years came to power with the help of anti-liberation forces. How shameful! Is power everything in human life? Then why did thousands of brothers, sisters sacrificed their valuable lives in 1971? My personal hatred to the polluted politics! Now we should turn our thoughts to reshaping our nation. The way Malaysia, a poor country not long before, became so developed is really amazing and worth noticing. Any country of the world, especially the third world countries like Bangladesh, may learn from how others are doing so well.
We have to remember that our huge population should be turned into significant human resources. This I strongly believe, may change the whole economic scenario of the country within a very short time.
