An old lady at a Boutique shop

Farzana Ashraf

Last week I met a lady of at least 70 years of age at a boutique shop. She was discussing a demanding issue with the boutique owner who was also a woman. I was simply amazed by the facts that I got to know from their conversation. The owner might have asked the old lady about her daughter-in-law, whether she stayed at home or did a job. The old lady replied “I'm very happy that my daughters are continuing with their job seriously and they don't have to place their hands in front of their partners for fulfilling even the tiny wishes. I remember when I was young, I used to be very fond of reading books but at the same time I was too shy to ask for money from my partner. As a result, I had to give up and the wish turned into a life-long hidden desire! Moreover, as I am not inhibiting my daughter's liberty, why would I be different in my daughter-in-law's case? She also has the same right as my daughters have to fulfill her dreams, her wishes...”

I came back home with these words ringing in my mind and soul. I was calm but at the same time restless. Why can't all the mothers and mothers-in-law of our country think like this old lady? If it was so then no girl of our country would have been suffering today. I went to sleep with lots of 'popping-up thoughts'. It is our responsibility to create a better society for the upcoming generation; it is my duty to do so for my daughter who is yet to come to this discriminatory world. We are liable to teach our sons the right behavior, the appropriate reaction and to make them know the real meaning of education. Yes...we should compromise and sacrifice but we should not accept something prejudiced, not in any sector of our life. If I let something unfair happen today or if I accept any injustice today, tomorrow I would not be able to be a considerate mother-in law, to teach my son justice and finally I would not be able to leave behind a better society for my daughter. Furthermore, my son could be an inconsiderate partner and my daughter could be an insensitive mother-in-law. In consequence, the same story would get repeated again and again in this society, the 'Vicious Cycle of Discrimination' would not get stopped and no one would be at peace.

Partnership among Clubs

EDUCATION is a podium to nurture the upcoming leaders of a nation. In our primary and secondary education we establish a base to pave the way for higher education, and in university to obtain higher education, we groom ourselves to kick off professional life. This grooming not only consists of education that will be needed to pertain in professional jobs, but also includes many extra curriculum activities, which will build us as adept as a professional. Club affairs in both public and private universities actually help students involve in these extra curriculum activities.

When I enrolled in university, along with my academic curriculum, I joined few clubs and tried to attend in different programs, arranged by these clubs. But I could not apprehend the real motive of those clubs. For me, it was just to utilize my spare time and to enjoy with friends. But gradually I realized that the motive of a club is to develop a particular skill in a student, for example, debate club enhance students' rationality and fluency of speaking, quiz competition enhance students' knowledge and such skills will support us to adapt the corporate assignment in a familiar way.

In most of the universities some clubs are common for example cultural club, debate club, business club etc. The students, who participate in the club activities enthusiastically and spontaneously, can groom themselves in different moulds. Competition among the students actually reflects the students' know-how in that particular field, which different clubs arrange. Thus, individual members of each club of each university compete among themselves. But what if all the common clubs of different universities place the exertion together?

In the corporate life, we have to fight with our competitors who will come from our university as well as from other universities. They will be alien competitor to counter for us. So it would be worthy and sage to compete with our challengers, when we are an undergraduate and before we graduate. It would only be possible when all the universities will work as partners for their common clubs. These clubs then will assemble the students of different universities, will leave them in a pasture of combat and reveal the strength of the competitors.

It will build a confidence among us to face the crucial reality of competitive job market. Moreover, what resource a university has, others may not have the same one, for example, a university may have an excellent faculty in a particular subject, where another university may have that of excellent faculty in some other subject. So this partnership can create a good liaison among different universities to share each one's excellence in its deficiency.

Recently, Battle of Minds and BrandWitz have created a podium to give this opportunity among the students, but more competitive initiative will be able to explore the aptitude of the students, where partnership of club affairs can work better.
