Stand up
against poverty

Amatus Samiu Binte Awal

INSTEAD of thinking and discussing that we can do something one day, if we really stand up and take action for the things that we want to achieve, then only we can change this world. In order to change the system we need to raise our voice so that people who are intentionally ignoring this sort of global issues can hear us.

According to some statistics, almost half the world-over 3 billion people-live on less than $2.50 a day, and nearly a billion people entered the 21st century, unable to read a book or sign their names. Such statistics shows how under developed we are from inside.

United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) is a voluntary youth and student movement for United Nations which is working for this global issue for the last four years. Every year this youth organization organizes a stand up event all over Bangladesh to raise the voice of the youth in order to eradicate poverty. Youth are the driving forces of our country and we all believe that if we can unite our youth together we can bring a change to the system. This year UNYSAB organized a six day long program to fight against poverty. A Human chain and a signature campaign on stand up event was held on 16th October at TSC which was followed by a photography competition and idea generation contest on 17th October, at Dhaka University and on 18th October at American International University, Bangladesh (AIUB) and Brac University, which ended at North-South University on 21st October.

Last year 116 million people stood up against poverty and in the support of the Millennium Development Goals. This year we expect that we can break the record one more time and show the world that we can end poverty just by raising our voice against it. All we need is to get united and stand up to take action against poverty.
