Shamuk's Eid collection

A three-day exhibition by fashion house Shamuk ended at the Drik Gallery on August 8. On the occasion of the coming Eid, it featured its uniquely hand-painted saris, shalwar kameez sets, panjabis, tops and fatuas. Handmade bags, shoes, curtains, bedcovers and cushion covers were also available.

In all the products, Shamuk's signature style -- hand-paint and the use of nature motif -- were prominent. Shamuk's designers take their inspiration from the local flora and fauna which was accentuated in their work. Materials used in all the products were also local -- cotton, silk, half-silk and chiffon. However, apart from these trademark features, plain Tangail saris of vibrant colours were also available. Two of the most interesting additions were the bags and the shoes in which the bold use of hand-paint attracted the attention of many.

Apart from their studio in Mirpur, all their products are found at Roddur in Dhanmondi's Orchard Point.

Studio Address: 34/18, Pallabi, Mirpur. Top floor, beside Majedul Haq Model School. # 0171 642 6768.

Ornob and his tees @ Aarong

Creative skills are transferrable within a broad range of different jobs perhaps. That's why you see so many creative people taking up different fields of work and attaining massive success in all or many of them. Ornob for example, has made his strong foothold in the hearts of many with his magical voice, lyrics and guitar. Now, he has stepped into a rather different territory, one that has quite nothing to do with singing.

In collaboration with Aarong, Ornob has stepped into designing T-shirts. On 7 August, 2012 a set of cool and funky tees saw their launching at Aarong's flagship outlet at Sector # 3, Uttara.

Within closed doors for the press meet and an impatient crowd of his fans waiting just outside on the 5th floor of the enormous outlet of Aarong, Ornob shared his passion for designing.

“T-shirts are a great form of expression. With interesting messages and designs, these are no less than walking billboards,” he said with a grin. “But the process of making them is indeed very tedious. I am very grateful to Aarong for giving me this opportunity.”

The T-shirts are indeed trendy and yet very simple and borrow themes from everyday life -- just like his songs. For example, tees with a funky and jolly-looking bicycle imprinted on it bring a simplistic and happy-go-lucky vibe.

“I have tried to have fun with this designing venture, just like I try to do with my songs; like a tee shirt I designed that has a picture of a cockroach emblazoned on the back of the shoulder,” Ornob says with a mic in one hand and a couple of his designed T-shirts on the other. And then of course, there was music, in the presence of a huge crowd filling up every inch of an electrified room.

The last few days of the Holy month remain and it seems like the month went away in a blink. The big day, Eid ul Fitr, is knocking on the door and there are much preparations to be done. Indulge yourself in doing charity work for the less privileged and you will be left finishing off your last few Ramadan days for the year with a feeling of self-content and fulfillment.

It is needless to define our love for red meat in order to justify its prominent presence in our dining tables. This week try out a different and healthy way of serving beef in your iftar by preparing this delicious Thai beef salad.

whole piece (approx 450g) eye fillet or fillet steak
For the salad:
1 cucumber, cut into ribbons
2 cups mixed salad leaves
1 red capsicum, cut into strips
1 shallot or spring onion, finely sliced
1-2 red or green chillies (optional)
Handful each of fresh coriander, mint and basil
2 tbsp cashew nuts or peanuts
For the dressing:
1/4 cup lime juice
1/4 cup fish sauce
1 tsp chilli flakes
2 tsp sugar

Heat a griddle pan or a barbecue grill to hot. Cook the beef in one piece so it's seared nicely all over turn it to brown all sides. Cook to your liking. Set the meat aside to rest for 5-10 minutes.

Combine all the salad ingredients on a large platter or individual plates. Make the dressing by combining all the ingredients and mixing well until the sugar dissolves. Taste and adjust; this is a very personal thing some people like it sweeter, some hotter. Slice the beef into thin slices. Arrange these on top of the salad, and drizzle the dressing over the top.

This week, set out for the streets after iftar and give out food to street children. The best way of doing it would be visiting the numerous road signals where a lot disadvantaged boys and girls roam around selling petty items. Or you can visit a squatter settlement nearest to your house and give out food. You're sure to receive some much appreciated blessings.

Eid is knocking at the door and you are almost at the brink to give a final touch to your home to prepare it for the big day. Hence, spend some time this weekend shopping for your home to buy some new cushion covers, bed sheets or table matts to give your house a brand new look. Apart from that, set some time aside after iftar to watch a classic Suchitra Sen movie with your family and friends.

You're done cleaning the whole house and shopping to give it a new look, but did you forget about the kitchen? Yes you did! Hence spend this weekend cleaning up your kitchen revamping by buying kitchen utensils like peelers and metal scrubbers that will make your job of cooking a large meal easy on Eid day.

You need to make sure that everything is there at its place for the big day. Get your clothes from the tailor, give your house a final cleanup and make sure you have all the right ingredients at home to cook up the perfect meal. End the day with a bang by inviting your colleagues over for iftar.

A few simple procedures

Well, Ramadan is here and along with fasting we are all thinking of the big day celebrations and how we want o present ourselves. Of course all of us want to look our best on that day as we go and visit close relatives and friends. We don't always take care of ourselves and Eid is a good time to start. Here are a few tips to follow which will make you look great.

The first thing to look good is to have good glowing skin, and we all need to follow the basic rule of cleansing, toning and moisturising every day, and we have to use sunscreen wherever we are. Even after that our skin can become rough and lose its glow due to everyday sun exposure, stress and other factors. Sun exposure also makes our skin prone to pigmentations like freckles or patchy pigmentations like Melasma. Some of us also have post acne scars and pits, which make the skin look rough. Microdermabrasion or MCD is a simple procedure by which the top layer of the skin is polished and the dead cells are suctioned off leaving the skin soft and smooth. As the dead cells are gone a new layer of fresh skin can regenerate. This procedure is very safe and non invasive and has to be repeated every three weeks for at least three to four sittings.

Chemical peels are another way of rejuvenating rough patchy skin. Nowadays very safe and mild peels are available which is suitable for our skin type. The peels strip off the top layer of skin and lets healthy new skin grow. It also tightens the skin and makes it lighter to look at. This needs to be done by an experienced cosmetic surgeon so that no complication develops. It can be repeated several times for a glowing and fresher appearance.

Dermaroller is a procedure done for post acne pits and scars and helps in making the skin more even. It can also be done on uneven scars elsewhere on the body.

Now for those who have started to show a few wrinkles on the forehead or have prominent laugh lines around the eyes, they can opt for Botox. It's a procedure where Botox is injected into the wrinkled areas to smoothen the skin. This procedure has to be repeated every 6 to 9 months.

If you have prominent nasolabial folds ,or see small wrinkles appearing around the lip area, or there are other depressions on your face that you do not like, these can be filled up by different artificial fillers that are available. The fillers are injected into the depressed areas to elevate them and look smooth. These have to be repeated every 6 to 9 months.

For those who have brownish freckles on the cheeks or nose can get them removed by Co2 laser ablation, This procedure is very safe and gentle and leaves no scar. Skin tags around the neck area or on the face look very bad, these can also be removed by CO2 laser. The procedure is painless and leaves no scar after healing.

Besides these there are also those who have problems like double chins, baggy eyelids or a nose they don't like. For your Eid makeover you can get these treated and be well by Eid .

Double chins makes a face look chubbier and can be treated simply by liposuction. It can be done under local anaesthesia and there is no residual scar. A compressing band must be worn for a while only when patient is at home. The patient can move around freely two days after the surgery. Baggy eyes can be treated by a procedure known as Blepharoplasty. The excess skin and fat from the upper or lower eyelids are removed by a crease line incision. The line heals very nicely and cannot be detected as it remains within the normal crease line. This procedure can be done by local anaesthesia. No hospital stay is needed for these procedures.

If you don't like the shape of your nose it can be fixed by a procedure known as Rhinoplasty. No scar is left after the procedure and a bandage is left for 3 days. Depending on the amount of work needed it can be done by local or general anaesthesia.

Whatever the flaw is that you have been thinking of getting corrected, take the opportunity now and make yourselves look more rejuvenated and fresh.
