CHECK IT OUT

Organic honey from the north-west

Honey is an ingredient long lost from our households due to rapid urbanisation and disappearance of plants and blooms from our urban lives. 'Nijera Mouchasi Shangothon' (NMS) hopes to bring about a massive change in the current scenario.

During a study made to identify ways of economical sustenance during periods of 'monga' (seasonal hunger), culturing bees for honey was deemed a viable option. Since then more than 600 poorer households from around 70 paras in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha and Dinajpur are engaged in honey production. Not only has NMS changed the livelihoods of the villagers through the revenue from honey, they are now well known in northwest Bangladesh for purity -- the honey is ethically sourced and organically processed, with certification from the Bangladesh Standard Testing Institute (BSTI). The NMS honey has an array and depth of flavours, based on the seasonal nectar source.

The ghost's story

We often encounter witnesses of time. And then there are the ghosts of time, standing firm as a relic with stories to tell but none to hear them. They are spread around us, maybe not in this concrete jungle but close nevertheless.

These medieval or colonial landmarks were once the abode of Zamindars or people from the affluent classes. Now, many hundred years later, there are no Zamindars or their next-of-kins. As the moss grows on their walls and their floors, these grand structures eagerly await avid listeners. As the wind blows through the empty halls and the broken rooms, there is a story being told, all you need is an ear and eagerness to hear the ghost's story.
