Former state minister Shafiqul Ghani Swapan passed away at a city hospital yesterday.
Ghani, son of prominent politician Mashiur Rahman Jadu Miah, served as state minister during the tenures of former presidents Ziaur Rahman and HM Ershad.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain expressed shock at the death of the politician.
In her condolence message, former premier Khaleda said the nation has lost a veteran politician.
"He believed in democracy and worked relentlessly for the welfare of the country's people," she said.
Khaleda and Delwar conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members of Ghani.
