Tributes to language heroes of Assam
Some patrons of Bangla language yesterday paid tribute to the eleven language movement heroes, who sacrificed their lives to establish Bangla as an official language in Assam of India.
Like Bangladeshi language martyrs Abdul Jabbar, Abul Barkat, the eleven heroes of Assam were shot dead by police while several thousands of people were observing blockade programme on May 19, 1961 near Silchar Railway Station to press their demand.
After eight years of language movement in Bangladesh, people of three districts--Kasar, Karimganj and Hailakahdi of Assam were getting united in demand of declaring Bangla as their official language like Assamese.
After six months of the continuous movement, it reached at the crucial stage on that day giving the heroes special place in the history.
The martyred heroes were--Kamala Bhattacharjee, Shanchindra Chandra Pal, Kanai Lal Niyogi, Hitesh Biswas, Sukomol Purkayastho, Tarani Debnath, Chandicharan Sutradhar, Sunil Sarkar, Kumuk Ranjan Das, Satendra Debnath and Birendra Sutradhar.
To commemorate the martyrs, Vasha Andolon Sriti Rakkha Parishad has been observing the day since 2003.
Following the tradition, the parishad members along with language movement heroes Abdul Matin, Rawshan Ara Bachchu, and language researcher Mohammad Asad paid tribute at the central Shaheed Minar in the city yesterday morning.
Dr Mirza Mazahar, president of the parishad, told a street rally that the government should observe the day with state honour.
