Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Muhammad Mahbub-Ul-Islam on Tuesday ordered further investigation into two cases filed after the grenade attack on a rally of Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta MP in Sunamganj in 2004.

The judge passed the order following a petition submitted by Special Public Prosecutor Kishore Kumar Kar, seeking further investigation into the cases.

The cases, one for murder and the other under Explosive Substances Act, were filed after grenade attack on the rally at Derai upazila headquarters on June 21, 2004. AL activist Abdul Wahid, 45, was killed and 30 others were injured in the attack.

Suranjit Sengupta and other AL leaders escaped unhurt as they got down from the dais just moments ahead of the attack.

CID Inspector Shafiqur Rahman on December 14, 2008 submitted charge sheets in the two cases with the Judicial Magistrate's Court in Sunamganj against Huji chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and six others, court sources said.

The other accused are Mufti Abdul Hannan's younger brother Mofizul Islam alias Mohibullah, Shariful Alam Bipul, Delwar Hossain Ripon, Hafiz Nayeem Ahmed, Mufti Main Uddin and Naziur Rahman Nazu.

Considering the importance of the two cases, the home ministry transferred the cases to the speedy trial tribunal through a gazette notification in October last year.

The tribunal on 30 June this year framed charges against the accused and started recording depositions of the witnesses July 13.

Earlier on 15 Sepember, the judge of the tribunal recorded deposition of seven police inspectors, who had served as investigation officers of the cases. The proscution witnesses include the then inspector of CID Shafiqur Rahman who had filed the charge sheets in the sensational cases.
