The recent tidal surge coupled with heavy rain damaged about 45 kilometres of a total of 2,055 kilometres flood control embankments in Bhola, Barguna and Patuakhali districts.

Saline water gushed in through the breached embankments on July 4 while heavy rain triggered by a depression inundated many villages causing damage to aman seedbeds in the districts.

Chief Engineer Mahtabuddin of Water Development Board (WDB) Barisal zone said the damaged embankments need urgent repair and

Tk 24.57 core is needed for this purpose.

Abdul Hannan, WDB executive engineer of Bhola division-1, said out of 100 kilometres flood control embankments under his jurisdiction, 1.5-km at Tulatali in Sadar and 1km at Guptaganj Bazar in Daulatkhan upazilas were completely damaged. Besides, 4.5-km embankment was partially damaged at different parts of the upazilas, he added.

Ataur Rahman, WDB executive engineer of Bhola division-2, said out of 150-km embankments, 270 metres at Tajumuddin and 330 metres at Manpura were fully damaged while 1.32-km at Tajumuddin, 1.42-km at Lalmohan, 1.06-km at Charfassion and 13-km at Manpura were partially damaged.

Of the total 805-km embankments under WDB Barguna division, 1km at Tetulbaria, 500 metres at Baliatali, and 1km at Ghatkali under Taltali upazila; 1 km at Maddha Baliatali, 600 metres at Dalvanga, and 400 metres at Bulbulia under Sadar upazila; 300 metres at Betagi, 500 metres at Ruhita, and 900 metres at Talmegha under Patharghata upazila were completely damaged, said Executive Engineer Md Zahiruddin.

Besides, 12-km embankment was partially damaged in different parts of the district, he added.

Water Development Board (WDB) Patuakhali office sources said, out of 1,000-km flood control embankments, 500 metres at Lalua, 500 metres at Nizampur, and 400 metres at Dhankhali in Kalapara upazila;

2-km at Charkajal, and 200 metres at Golkhali under Galachipa upazila; and 2-km at Andar Char under Rangabali upazila were fully damaged.

The tidal surge partially damaged 511-km of dykes in the upazilas, sources added.
