United International University IT Festival 2006!
Shamma M. Raghib
Out of all the festivals in UIU, namely Debate, Table tennis Championship, Drama and Film Show etc, the UIU IT Festival 2006 was probably the most interesting of all. The UIU Computer Club carried out the program in four stages. First was a game show, which allowed gamers to play their favorite racing game NFS (Need For Speed 6)! An IT quiz follwed where Bhanu, Ashik and Mehdi were judged 1st second and third respectively. Later on there was a programming contest where programmers solved various problems withim a given time. Shahriar, Faizul and Shadat were judged the first, second and third respectively!
Apart from these, the most attractive segment was the software exposition where the university students displayed their software. Some of the software's names are mentioned below…
Canteen Manager Pro. [Vb + Access]: Developed by Hussain KMR Behestee, this software is designed specially for efficient canteen management. There are two options for customers: pre-paid and post-paid. Included in the software is all types of facilities from security maintenance to inventory management system . There is an option of manager changing the product rate. There is also an impressive search function, which tells you the amount of inventory remaining if any. The software also supports single and multi-PC links.
This software was awarded the 3rd prize.
Another exceptional software was Spy Car V-1.1.0. Hussain KMR Behestee and Md. Masud Elahi programmed this software using Visual Basic and Microsoft Speech SDK5.0. The system can be operated using simple keyboard arrow keys and also by voice command. The user, who is driving the car, does not need to watch out when he drives. He can just look at the monitor and then come to his decisions. The inter-active system is still under research. The developers have the confidence that this can be a fully functional Spy Car, which can be operated over one Kilometer range using wireless communication.
Nowadays, a remote control is available for every electronic device possible. The UIU students Md. Hasan Shahariar and Shuvo have come up with the second prize-winning software called Remote-Controlled Computer. This can operate all the software, keyboards and mouse events just by a pressing the button.

The first prize-winner however, was a web application called 'Total Educational Portal of Bangladesh' www.bdeducationinfo.com is the web application designed for students containing the following information: School/College info, University, Polytechnic info, Admission notifications, Foreign universities, University Calendars, Scholarship and student VISA/immigration information. Others include coaching center and University Alumni information. Developed by Dewan Md. Fayzur Rahman and Shafique Md. Mostafa, this web portal was judged a truly innovative approach to study solutions in Bangladesh!
Not only these, other software included export manager (merchandising software) which got 2nd prize, FTP Client Server, Brainstorm professional edition, Prepaid water meter and Cable TV Scroll Advertising System also got the judges appreciation. At the end of the day, the university students went home happy with their progress. They are some of the hidden gems of our country. We need to give them the proper platform and resources to truly help develop our country for the better. The government can buy some of the software mentioned here instead of buying one form abroad with millions of dollars. Why waste resources abroad when our Bangladeshi kids have far more potential to show?
