Fashion this season!

Sabrina Hasan Shoily

Life as a student isn't easy especialy when you have to juggle two domains of studies. Being a student of Business Administration and Fashion Design simultaneously, I have been experiencing queer reactions from people of all corners. Whenever I tell about my two academic disciplines, curious glares are what I receive from allbe it at my universities, at my friend's or relative's houses, or anywhere!

The first question that I usually face is: 'Why are you studying two subjects at a time….don't you have an aim in your life?' My answer to this question is usually a grin, and I occasionally make the effort to actually answer this question.

Then, I usually have to face a rapid fire round! My friends and relatives bombard me with bizarre questions like: 'What's IN this season?', 'What colors should I try to wear?', 'What kind of saris should I wear at my sister's neighbor's wedding?!' I try to answer to all these questions patiently and if I can't do so for any reason, I have to hear comments which don't do any justice to me!'

Hmm, those were some of the odd accounts from my life. Okay, let's stop babbling and get straight to business. From now on, I am going to be the "un official" fashion consultant of our Star Campus readers and I will give you all the information about 'what's in and what's out' in our fashion.

It is almost the end of monsoon but we are still witnessing downpours. Autumn is going to come up in no time. Colors such as, peach, beige (for those who don't know, beige is a very light yellowish brown), rust and gold are a rage now. Gone are the days of magenta, blue and please, no more green, we have had enough of it! Fabrics such as brocade and velvet are gaining popularity once again. 'Kundan' stones in clothes are out now. So, all girls out there with a wardrobe full of stones please keep them aside until the next time they are back in fashion. The Bollywood movie 'Bunty aur Bubli' did create a lot of stir in terms of fashion…the kameez with collars, ponchos and long, gypsy skirts were the most popular fashion items last year….but now, no more sequined collars on kameez!! Though girls are still wearing the gypsy skirts but don't you think it is difficult to wear them in monsoon? You always have to worry about the mud and rain. So, these skirts are out! Wear knee-length handkerchief skirts in beautiful shades, they will definitely look pretty!

In terms of neckline, low deep neck and classic V-neck are in. Kurtis worn with narrow belts, tops with flares and asymmetric bottom are considered 'in' this season. As far as shoes are considered, pencil heels and stilettos are back with a bang. You should own at least one pair of stilettos. Embroidered shoes are also widely available and they look good with traditional wear. Floral motifs have taken the place of geometric motifs. For boys, embroidered shirts are very much 'in'. Wear them with your regular denims, wear a cool, funky watch…brush your hair nicely and do not forget to wear a pair of smart shoes…and you are all set to attract the attention of the fairer sex!

Pink is the new Black!! (Do I sound like Preity Zinta in one of the new scooter advertisements?!) Anyway, pink happens to be the hottest colour! So, take out all your pink fashion accessories and clothes which you have been hiding for a while. Wear them proudly, smartly and look good!

The line a little above the normal waistline is called the empire waistline. Nowadays, tops with the empire waist line are very much in fashion. Check out the branches of 'Ecstasy', they have a new collection of such tops with pretty ornamentation! Also, corset is very much 'in' nowadays. Watch Rani Mukherjee in the song 'Mitwa' from the movie 'Kabhi alvida na kehna' and you will know what exactly I am talking about! But as you cannot wear a corset and roam around in Dhaka city, wear a fashionable scarf or shirt over it!

Do not wear churidaar if God has gifted you with a superb height! Don't wear huge belts if you haven't been blessed with a great height. Try to wear horizontal stripes if you are tall and wear vertical stripes if you are short. Try not to put too much of make-up this season. You do not want your make-up to wash away with the rain! Keep it simple with just a little kajol and lip gloss.

That's all for today…….I hope the readers have enjoyed reading about all the things that are 'In' and 'Out' this season. Hopefully I'll be back with more fashion tips in the forthcoming issues. Till then, have a great time…and oh, if you find something fashionable, do let me know!
