BU Café…..the Adda House

Irtiza Farooq

Cafeteria… to us students this place seems better than home. Our cafe is something we are proud of. Whenever we step inside through those glass doors, a warm and joyous feeling runs through our veins. It feels so good because at that moment we realize that “yes” our existence does matter to our friends. We are an important part of somebody else's life. When we enter the café we are welcomed with a hug, or a handshake or just a “Hey man, how are you?” - simple gestures that make us feel important. These gestures give us a reason to keep up because we know that we have friends who really care for us. It doesn't matter if we just failed a test, or if we were late for a class, or if we had a fight with someone because when we see all those smiling faces looking and waving at us, all our gloominess just vanishes.

Our café is like a world of its own, as if it were a totally different society. The place has an environment where all sorts of people can just blend in. There are no seniors, no juniors, no girls, no boys. All we have is groups of friends hanging out, or as we say in our language……addafaying!!! It is a place where you can mingle easily. It is a place where you can let yourself go. It has a magic that tells us we can have as much fun as we want and no one will come and stop us. Even the faculty members' attitude change when they enter the café. They act as if they are still twenty years old. They chat with us, they make fun of other teachers, and they laugh as loud as they can because they know that inside these four walls they can do anything they want because they too believe in the magic of BRAC University Cafeteria.

All though we always complain about the food they serve but actually we do it because we love to complain. “Aunty”, who is in charge of our café, feeds us in the same way she would feed her own children. Our morning starts with parata and vegetable, which is followed by lunch when we have khichuri, or tehari, or just plain rice. But the best dishes are prepared after 3:00 pm. Dalpuri and chotpoti are the two things which make our mouths water and make us rush to the café in the evening.

Our café is a very important part of our lives. Inside the café, we are scattered here and there. Some do their assignments, some revise for their tests, some prepare to cheat for their tests, some people eat and there are some who just sit there and addafy.

Although we are doing different things but there is a bond that holds us together.

It makes us feel that we are not each of us different people, but the vital parts of one single body. Everyone is a part of the family and the moments that we spend with this family in this place are the moments we will cherish for the rest of our lives.
