AIUB seminar on ICT

Recently American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) and Development Research Network (D.Net) jointly organized a seminar on ICT Development titled " Role of ICT to Build Future Bangladesh" at the university auditorium in the city.

Pro-Vice chancellor of AIUB Prof. Dr. Tafazzal Hossain formally opened the seminar and appreciated D.Net for its support in such initiative. Keynote speaker of the seminar Mr. Mahmud Hasan, Program Director, D.Net stated the strategies to utilize the facilities of ICT for the social development of the country. Md. Forhad Uddin, Sr. Research Associate, D.Net conducted a multimedia session where he highlighted the present activities of D.Net to build future ICT enabled Bangladesh. Organizers of the seminar, faculty members, students from different disciplines also attended the seminar.

National Conference on Cryptography and Information Systems (NCCIS) 2006 at DIU

Daffodils International University (DIU) hosted the National Conference on Cryptography and Information Systems (NCCIS) 2006 on December 15. The programme featured discussions on security issues related to Information systems. Information security involves issues like confidentiality and integrity of information, authentication of sources etc.

Researchers from 13 universities including Dhaka University (DU), Jahangirnagar University (JU), Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), Daffodil International University (DIU) participated at the event. Chief guest of the programme was Prof. M. Asaduzzaman, Chairman University Grand's Commission (UGC), special guest was MD. Sabur Khan and the programmed was presided over by Prof. Dr. Aminul Islam, Vice Chancellor (VC) of DIU.

IUB runner-up at "Battle of Minds" contest
Independent University, Bangladesh secured runner-up position in the Battle of Minds contest in a close competition with IBA of Dhaka University which bagged the first position. The contest, organized yearly by the British American Tobacco Bangladesh was held this year at its corporate office at Mohakhali, Dhaka yesterday. IUB team members were Mohammad Tareque Ismail, Mohammad Wasfi Tanim, Tanvir Ahmed Haroon and Tanzia Sultana Chowdhury. IUB team was accompanied by a faculty member Mohammad Ali Arafat of the School of Business.

Apart from IUB and IBA, seven other universities which participated in the contest were North South University, American International University of Bangladesh, East West University, BRAC University, Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Science and Technology (BUET) and Khulna University.

This is IUB's second consecutive success in this very prestigious competition of the country. Through a process of competitive elimination, the final achievers were declared at a function, attended by BATB high-ups, faculty members and students of the participating universities and others.

UNHCR holds presentation on Refugee Law at Southeast University
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Bangladesh initiated an awareness raising programme on refugee law and protection principles among the students of different law schools/departments. The aim of the activity is to have a pool of law graduates sensitized on refugee law, an emerging branch of International Law.

As part of this, UNHCR has made the second presentation on "Refugees' Rights and Mandate of UNHCR" at the Department of Law and Justice, Southeast University (SEU) in Dhaka recently. Issues relating to definitions of asylum seekers, refugees, internally displaced and stateless persons, international protection of refugees, re-foulement, rights and obligations of refugees, basis of refugee law, mandate of UNHCR, Bangladesh's obligation to refugees' rights and UNHCR's operations in Bangladesh etc were discussed. Two documentaries projecting the topic discussed and activities of UNHCR were also screened. Latter on, there was a question and answer session.

Mr. Francis Teoh, Deputy Representative (Protection) and Dr. Uttam Kumar Das, National Protection Officer of UNHCR Bangladesh conducted the sessions.Professor Dr. M Shamsher Ali, Vice-Chancellor, Southeast University spoke on the occasion as the Chief Guest while it was presided over by Professor Dr. Tareq M R Chowdhury, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and Chairman, Department of Law and Justice, SEU. Mr. A S M Tofazzel Haque, Assistant Professor of the Department presented address of welcome. Professor Dr. M Shamsher Ali in his speech appreciated the role of UNHCR in creating awareness of the students on Refugee Law and related issues.
