Profile of a good student

Mainul Hassan

Tell me what is the most common dream of any university student? Yes, it is the dream of graduating with a handsome academic background and securing a bright future. It is with this dream that every university fresher sets his feet on the first step of higher education.

But after a couple of semesters most of them realize this dream of theirs will always remain a dream. It may sound harsh but nonetheless it is the truth. A vast number of students never reach their desired goals.

But all hopes don't die out. There is always that someone who 'achieves' that which may seem 'unachievable' by most.

Yes, I am talking about the brilliant students. A good student is not only a matter of pride for a university but also a national treasure. They can be considered the jewels of any department.

I managed to meet and speak to a student who won the Prime Minister's gold medal 2006 for outstanding academic performance.

He is Md. Mamun Ur Rashid, son of Late Harun Ar Rashid and Rahima Khatun . He graduated from the Islamic University Kustia (IUK) securing the first position both in his BBA and MBA.

"To be the best is not an easy task. Part of being a good student is to be very serious and sincere about studies right from the beginning and attending classes regularly." said Rashid. "If a student is serious about studies from the beginning then he will certainly do well."

"It's important for a student to maintain a regular routine. Maintaining a study routine is very effective. I found it very useful." He said. "Also, my teachers have always helped me with their guidance, most appreciably with their valuable advice."

His brother Md. Ashrafur Rashid also graduated with him securing the second position.

"It is always important to have discussions on class lectures in case any one missed anything during the class. In my case I used to have long discussions with my brother. These discussions played a very vital role behind our achievement."

Everyone studies but why someone in the class always scores the most, what's the secret?

"There is no secret. One has to be sincere, that's all" Said Rashid. " It is not important to sit at the study table for the whole day. A student gets bored after couple of hours and when that happens no matter how hard one studies it doesn't get him anywhere."

So what should a student do? He/ she must do well in study but being glued to the table won't help either. So
what is the solution?

"What I used to do is I used to take regular study breaks. I just walked around the house, had tea and after couple of minutes I was back to the table. I found it really effective."

How long do you think it is necessary for a student to study?

"If a student studies for six hours a day regularly and maintains a good routine then that's all he needs."

What is your future plan?

"My future plan is to be a teacher. I want to contribute to the noble task of raising good and responsible citizens."

Any last words for our students?

"My message to all students is that student life is the most crucial period for anyone. The outcome of this phase will decide your future. Please don't waste it. It is very easy to get distracted. Try to avoid anything that may hamper your study. Stick to your goals and you won't fail. Good luck."

TEACHER:
"Why are you late?"

WEBSTER: "Because of the sign."

TEACHER: "What sign?"

WEBSTER: "The one that says, 'School Ahead, Go Slow.'"

TEACHER: "Cindy, why are you doing your math multiplication on the floor?"

CINDY: "You told me to do it without using tables!"

TEACHER: "John, how do you spell 'crocodile'?"

JOHN: "K-R-O-K-O-D-A-I-L."

TEACHER: "No, that's wrong."

JOHN: "Maybe it is wrong, but you asked me how I spell it!"

TEACHER: "What is the chemical formula for water?"

SARAH: "H I J K L M N O!!"

TEACHER: "What are you talking about?"

SARAH: "Yesterday, you said it's H to O!"
