VC AIUB awarded Presidential
                               Awards for Filipino Individualse

DR. Carmen Z Lamagna, the Vice Chancellor of American International University-Bangladesh was one of the awardees of the 2006 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas. The award ceremony was held in Malacanang Palace, Manila, Philippines on Dec. 7, 2006. Awards were conferred by Her Excellency Mrs. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the President of the Philippines.

The prestigious Presidential Awards was launched in 1991 and is held every 2 years. The awards program is intended to give recognition to individuals or organizations that contribute to Philippine development and progress, or promote the interests of Overseas Filipino communities. The awards are also given to Filipinos overseas who have distinguished themselves in their profession and have brought honor to the Filipino people.

The 2006 honorees were selected from 158 nominations from 20 countries by the Philippine Embassies and Consulates in these countries.

Dr. Lamagna delivered the acceptance speech on the said occasion on behalf of the 48 awardees. She talked about nationalism transcending borders, "I used to question my friends and relatives who, before me, chose to work abroad and leave their families behind. Later, I came to realize that it was the Filipino spirit of "sikap and tiyaga" (diligence, hardwork and perseverance) embedded in us by our heroic forefathers that has brought us to distant shores.

Never mind the pain of separation, never mind the uncertainties and risks, for as long as there is a job available somewhere that one could perform with dignity, the most important thing was and continues to be, that one could eventually return home to the Philippines a little better off than before and with a newly-found sense of achievement in having done our best."
