Warm clothes distribution

In Dhaka, the Socialist Student Front (SSF) has taken initiative to collect money and clothes from people in different parts of the city. BUET and Dhaka University unit of SSF collected clothes from the students, teachers, and officials of various halls and from different departments.

After collecting the clothes SSF sent these to various districts like Moulovibazar, Rangpur, Kurigram, Naogaon, Dinazpur, Panchagar and other northern districts through their local Branches.

Hossain Ahamed, president of SSF, DU says that their activity is still going on and it will be continuing in future all over the country.

Spring semester begins at IUB

The classes of Spring 2007 semester began at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on 28 January 2007 at Dhaka and Chittagong campuses. To welcome the new students, the Spring 2007 orientation ceremony was held at the Baridhara campus. On the occasion, the premises wore a festive look with festoons and banners.

The ceremony started with a welcome speech by Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Omar Rahman who informed the freshmen about the distinctive nature of IUB education which places importance of professional education on the foundation of cross-disciplinary curricula. The Registrar, Dr Tanvir A Khan made the presentation on the registration process to assist newly admitted students. Welcoming the freshmen, Vice Chancellor Professor Bazlul Mobin Chowdhury conducted a lively question and answer session participated by the new students and their parents.

Ms Yasmeen Z Mahmud, Assoc. Dean, Admissions gave a vote of thanks and introduced the officials involved in the process of undergraduate admission. Ms Lima Chowdhury, Asst. Registrar conducted the ceremony. The Directors and senior faculty of the School of Business, School of Engineering & Computer Science, School of Environmental Science & Management and School of Liberal Arts & Science were present.

Bird fair at RU campus

Environmentalist's said, more than 400 species of bird have become extinct from the world because of deforestation and increase of temperature. Besides, more than 300 spices of bird of Bangladesh are on the verge of extinction. Due to loss of bird, the environmental balance and eco-balance of the country is being hampering.

The speakers said it at a seminar titled 'Bangladeshi Bird and its Environment' on the eve of two-day-long Bird fair at Rajshahi University campus recently. Rajshahi University Institute of Environmental Science and Bangladesh Bird club jointly organized the fair at the Third Science Building premises of the campus. RU Vice-Chancellor professor Altaf Hossain inaugurated the fair as chief guest in the seminar while Bangladesh Bird Club president Inam Al Haq, pro-vice chancellor professor Mamnunul Keramat, DU teacher professor Obaidul Haque, UK bird lover James Pender, Institute of Environmental Science (RU), director professor Dr. Sarwar Jahan, professor Abdul Mannan, hosts of environmentalists and students took part in the discussion meeting.

On the first day of the fair, display of photos on birds, collection exhibition of Inam Al Haque, stamp collection of Sumona were held.

On the concluding day on Sunday bird fair organizers also had bird watching programme by telescope at T-groine beside river Padma and bird census of Pachamaria beel of Rajshahi.

Launching of UNESCO Projects at Rifles College

Birshrestha Munshi Abdur Rouf Rifles College launched 3 UNESCO projects last 18 January. The Chief Guest of the programme was Hassan A. Keynan, the Acting Country Director of UNESCO in Bangladesh, while Principal Mia Md. Moniruzzaman was in the Chair. The other discussants included: Dr. Mahmudul Hasan, Sectary of Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO (BNCU), and Vice Principal of the college Mussarrat Nayema and the Secretary General of UNESCO clubs in Bangladesh Mahbub Uddin Chowdhury. The whole programme was conducted by Subrata Kumar Das, the coordinator of the UNESCO Club of the college.

The day-long programme was inaugurated in the college field with a poster and book exhibition published by UNESCO. Later on the students were shown cds on UNESCO and ASPnet activities. Last of all the discussion programme was held.

The three projects that have started are: World Heritage in Young Hands, All Equal in Diversity and Volvo Adventure. The teachers who will monitor the projects are: Sultan Farid, Abu Darda and Shawkat Hossain.

DU admission exam begins

Results of first year honours admission test of 'Ka' unit under Science Faculty for the sessions 2006-2007 have been published. A total of 17,611 candidates appeared in the exam and a total of 6757 have passed.

The admission test of the “Kha” unit, of 2006-2007 session was held on February 02.

The tests were held in MCQ system and for every wrong answer marks have been deducted.

Annual sports at BUET

The annual sports event of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) will be held on February 16.

The heat event for the upcoming session was held on January 25th at the BUET field. It was a great sight seeing a huge turnout of students, all of them standing in line waiting for their turn. A total of 150 male students from 7 student halls participated. The number of female participants wasn't that high, and finally only 19 of them turned out.

Heat events were held for 19 different categories. They are 100m sprint (male), Shotput (male), 100m sprint (female), High jump (female), 200m sprint (male), Discus throw (male), Shotput (female), 1500m sprint (male), Broad jump (male), 200m sprint (female), 110m High Hurdles, Javelin throw (female), 400m sprint (male), Broad jump (female), Triple jump (female), Discuss throw (female) and 500m sprint (male).

Eight players were selected from each category and will battle out each other in the finals, which will be held on February 16.

BRAC SPH news

On the occasion of the successful conclusion of the 2006-07 academic year, the James P. Grant School of Public Health (SPH) organized the 2006-07 Graduates' Forum on February 3, 2007, at the Sasakawa Training Centre, ICDDR, B. Graduating students made oral and poster presentations of their theses, and awards were handed out to deserving graduates. Professor J.R Choudhury, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, was the chair of the Forum. Other speakers on the occasion were Dr. A.M.R Chowdhury, Dean, SPH, Professor David Sack, Executive Director ICDDR, B and Dr. Demissie Habte. Graduating students of 2006-07 also spoke on the occasion.

Diverse activities at DU

Tazmia Islam Nion

The weeklong cultural activity at Dhaka University as well as the inauguration of the official website of TSC was held in a festive mood at TSC last Thursday (January 25) by DU VC Dr. S M A Faiz.

“The university was almost stagnant for the last two or three months due to the political crisis. However, we are now in full swing and I think today's cultural program will add flavor to the environment'' said Dr. S M A Faiz, VC of Dhaka University while inaugurating the cultural program. He added, “Only book-based knowledge cannot be sufficient in this era of globalization. Cultural activities are a precondition to bringing out other potentialities. Students should be aware of their cultural roots.”

Professor A F M Yousuf Haider appreciated the initiative of launching the official website and hoped that this cultural calendar will be just as beneficial for the students as the academic calendar. Advisor of TSC Professor Dr. Mustafizur Rahman chaired the program. The declaration of renovating TSC also came from the authority on the occasion. The haphazard condition of TSC is going to get a new look at the hands of Ekushey Award winner and prominent sculptor Hamiduzzan Khan. A sculpture named “Shantir Paira” is also going to be established by him, said the Advisor of TSC.

Multistoried multipurpose building
Superb news for the culture-lovers: the authority is going to build a multistoried building in the premises of the swimming pool. There will be seminar rooms and rehearsal rooms along with all modern facilities. The exceptionality of the program was that the whole session was held without the presence of a host. The laser show attracted spectators the most. The cultural program started with the precession of Nazir Ahmed Shimab and Dilshad Begum. Susmita Zaman, Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Director Alamgir Hossain proceeded with their incredible performance of songs, recitation and speech.

The dance performed by Sormili Bandhopadhay and her team was the highlight of the event. The programme ended with a song by Mehrin.

BRAC University 2nd Convocation

BRAC University is going to hold their 2dn convocation on 8th February 2007, in the Bangladesh Chine Friendship Conference Center. Professor Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed, Honorable President and Chancellor of BRAC University, will preside over the ceremony. Dr. Gowher Rizvi will be the guest speaker for the convocation. Over two hundred students will be receiving their degrees in the ceremony.

Co-curricular activities of UODA

A total of 18 (eighteen) students of BBA 4th Batch, Finance major of UODA (University of Development Alternative) were taken to the World Bank Office on Wednesday, December 28, 2006 as part of their co-curricular activities. The students were accompanied by the course teacher Mr. Siddique Hayat Khan, Lecturer, UODA. Ms. Rehnuma Amin from World Bank gave a presentation on the different development activities of World Bank in Bangladesh. The presentation covered different aspects of World Bank, like Country Assistance Strategy, Project Life Cycle and major projects undertaken by the World Bank in Bangladesh. At the end of the presentation, students were shown the PIC (Public Information Centre) Library. The students and their course teachers expressed their gratitude to Ms. Rehnuma Amin and Ms. Razia Rouf for the presentation. UODA offers a course titled “International Financial Institutions” for the students majoring in finance. As part of the program, students are given exposure to the activities of different International Financial Institutions like the IMF, the World Bank, the GATT, etc.
