50 years of Shahed Bir Uttam Lt. Anwar Girls' School & College- Excellence in Diversity

Back in 1957 there used to be a vaguely populated primary school in the tranquil surroundings of Dacca cantonment. An institution initially constructed in order to educate the children of defense officers. Later, in 1959, it emerged as a junior high school eventually paving its way towards the establishment of a consummate high school that brought into being one of today's most prestigious institutions imparting education to girls. It was named after the valiant Liberation War martyr Lt. Md Anwar Hossain in 1972.Thus the journey of Shaheed Bir Uttam Lt. Anwar Girls School began. Sequentially in 1990 it was upgraded into a college.

Since its inauguration fifty years ago Shaheed Anwar Girls School and College has never retreated but only remained converged to thrive further. Throughout the years it has worked hard to achieve excellence and proved its efficiency on the matter. The SSC and HSC results of academic year 2005 and 2006 have been an immense success making the institution a brand name for quality education. Currently it is hosting a batch of more than 150 teaching staff and 4 thousand students altogether. It houses all modern facilities including science labs, an affluent library and a very well- maintained campus for its students.

In 2007, the institution stepped into its Golden Jubilee year and to mark the occasion a two day long program was organized. The eventful days of 15 and 16 February comprised of many joyful celebrations. The first day of celebration involved three significant parts. Chief Guest of the day was Lt. General Moyeen U. Ahmed. He was cordially welcomed by the acting principal Col. Md. Abdul Baten, president of the college management committee, Brgd.General Nizam Ahmed, and OSASA (Old Student's Association of Shaheed Anwar) chairperson, Begum Nazneen Shakil. Later the chief guest was escorted by Ser. Joshepha Elizabeth's train of cadets to the stage. The Principal of the institution and president of the college management committee respectively gave their introductory speeches. Both of them emphasised on the importance of extra curricular activities and the endeavor of Shaheed Anwar in practicing them. They thanked all the people related to the flourishing of their beloved institution. The opening followed chief guest's speech and honoring of four past meritorious students of the institution. A large number of former teachers and diligent army officials were seen to adorn the audience with their revered presence.

The second part of celebrations was venerated by the president of Bangladesh Science Academy and VC of South East University, Dr. M. Shamsher Ali. He distributed prizes among the those who secured first position in the final examinations of academic year 2006. In his speech he inspired the young minds to set exceptional examples. Later, students took part in various cultural activities. Then it was time for the last episode of the day's celebration. In this part the chief guest was Managing Director of Channel I, Mr. Faridur Reza Sagar.

He gave away prizes to the winners of a week long inter-house cultural competition. The runners-up were Shamsunnahar Mahmud house and the champions were Begum Rokeya house. Debate for Democracy Chairman Mr. Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron also distributed prizes among the Champions (Shamsunnahar Mahmud house) of inter-house debate contest. Afterwards they shared a few words with the students. The celebrations were wrapped up with the stunning performances of famous Close-up one artist Sonia who happened to be an ex student of the institution, Muhin, Natun Kuri singer Jhinuk and popular TV personality and ATN Bangla

Presenter Dr. Sweetie. The following day was marked by various cultural programs participated by the college students and prizes were distributed by distinguished guest Begum Nazneen Moyeen. Then came the laser show, cultural events and a grand dinner arranged by OSASA.

With all the fun-filled moments of this celebration and amidst hymns of hopes students and teachers of Shaheed Anwar warmed themselves up to embrace a new beginning.
