Collaboration between Stamford University and Monash University, Australia

A delegation from Monash University (MU) visited Stamford University (SU) recently. Dr Monzur Morshed, head of Gippsland School of Information and Technology representing MU visited the SU Siddeswari campus on last Tuesday. Stamford University has an agreement of collaboration with Monash University, Australia under the Education services for overseas student Act 2000 (Australia). According to the agreement any student of CSE Department of SU will be able study at Monash after completion of two years in SU. Also present on the occasion were Joynal Abedin, Executive Vice President SU, Hassan Towfiq, Registrar SU and others.

Orientation at Northern International Medical College (NIMC)

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. SMA Faiz called upon the students to devote themselves to pursuing knowledge to serve the country. He was addressing the orientation ceremony of second batch MBBS program of Northern International Medical College (NIMC) as chief guest at the auditorium of Bangladesh Institution of Administration and Management (BIAM) at Eskaton in the city last week.

Science Fair at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College

Viqarunnisa Noon School and College (VNC) held a science fair last week. The young participants displayed 266 projects, which attracted a huge audience. This year's fair mainly featured projects related to electricity and focused on alternative sources of energy. Students from various colleges displayed their invented methods and projects. The fair began on February 16 and ended on February 19.

Ekushey Programme at UIU

United International University (UIU) held a two-day event to observe the International Mother Language Day (Ekushey February). Various programmes were held that mainly featured display of rare stamps, photography exhibition and film screening. Many films on our Liberation War and Language Movement were shown. It was an open to all event and students from other universities also attended the programme.


Informatics Olympiad at BRAC University

On the 18th of February, BRAC University Computer Club (BUCC) organized the Bangladesh Olympiad of Informatics 2007. Over fifty students from all over the country came to participate in the contest, which was the first of its kind hosted by BRAC University. The contest was inaugurated at 8 AM in the morning, and lasted for five hours. Prominent members of Bangladesh Informatics Olympiad Committee like Dr. Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, Mohammad Kaikobad and Dr. Lutfur Rahman were present on the occasion. Vice-chancellor of BRAC University Professor Jamilur Reza Chowdhury distributed certificates among all participants during the closing ceremony, held at 2 PM in the indoor games room of the university. Participants of past International Math Olympiads, International Olympiad of Informatics and ACM ICPC contests were also present on the occasion, making it a collection of some of the greatest talents of the country. The vice-chancellor praised the efforts of the faculty and students in making the event a success, and hoped to see more such endeavors in the future.


Picnic by MBA Club of Daffodil International University

Daffodil International University (DIU) MBA club held a picnic for its members at Kapashiya. A number of students and alumni of the MBA Department participated in the picnic along with friends and family. They passed the day amidst games, quiz show and lots of fun. A cultural programme was also held.

Professor Dr. Aminul Islam, Vice Chancellor, DIU; Professor M. Shahjahan Mina, Pro Vice-Chancellor; Dr. Mostafa Kamal, Registrar; and other faculty members participated in the picnic.


Certificate Handover Ceremony at Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST)

The 5th Certificate Handover Ceremony of Master of Business Administration and Engineering Programs of MIST was held on February 26, 2007. Dr. Ayub Quadri, Education Adviser of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh was present as Chief Guest. This time the 6th Batch of Master of Business Administration, 3rd Batch of Civil Engineering, 3rd Batch of Computer Science and Engineering, 1st Batch of Electrical, Electronics, and Communication Engineering, and 1st Batch of Mechanical Engineering graduated from this institute. MIST, located at Mirpur Cantonment, Dhaka, is a premium educational institution of Bangladesh Armed Forces, which runs MBA and Engineering Programs for both military and civil students under the affiliation of the University of Dhaka.

Freshers' Reception '07, IUT
…filled with a touch of creativity

The touch of creativity with smart presentation and display of charismatic performance were seen everywhere all through when IUTians organised Freshers' Reception '07. The reception programme took place on Tuesday, the 13th of February, 2007 in the IUT Auditorium, Islamic University of Technology (IUT) Campus, Gazipur. The 2nd year students ('05 batch) worked day and night for the past few weeks to make the programme a success.

Every year IUTians organise Freshers' Reception to welcome a batch of new students. Unlike other universities, it has far surpassed just to be acknowledged as a traditional reception ceremony. It has become the binding energy for IUtians that kept them together as far as graduated ones are concerned and will keep us together, those who are yet to be graduated.

Poetry festival at DU

The 21st National Poetry Festival, organised by Jatiya Kabita Parishad was held on February 18 and 19 on Dhaka University campus. This year the festival was dedicated to the memories of late poet Shamsur Rahman and late artist Nitun Kundu. More than 200 local and foreign poets took part in the event.

A good number of foreign poets including Nirendranath Chakrabarti, Samarendra Sen Gupta, Kamol De Sarkar, Syed Hasnat Jalil, Arne Johnson, Niklas Soderberg, Henrick C Enboham and Clara Diesen took part in the festival.

Celebrated poet and playwright Syed Shamsul Haq inaugurated the 21st poetry festival at DU Central Library premises on February 18.

A procession was brought out on the opening day and participants placed wreaths of flower on the graves of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and Kamrul Islam. They also placed wreathes on the central Shaheed Minar.

Along with few of the participants from India, Swedish Writers' Union that had also joined the National Poetry Festival paid tribute to the Language Martyrs on February 21 on the Central Shaheed Minar Premises. A painting exhibition was organised jointly by National Poetry Council and Gallery Chitrak.

Syed Shamsul Haq was given Jatiya Kabita Parishad award while Asad Chowdhury received the Jatiya Kabita Purashkar (award) in the festival.


DU Film Festival ends

To evaluate the achievements of Bengali films, Dhaka University Chalachitra Sansad (DUCS) organised a five-day long film festival last month under the title "Amar Bashar Chalachitra - 2007."

The festival also aimed to celebrate the International Mother Language Day and Amar Ekushey and accordingly showed 20 Bengali films both from Bangladesh and West Bengal.

The films shown in the festival included Khelaghar, Galpo Holeu Satti, Chhutir Ghanta, Antarjatra, Andarmahal, Chitra Nadir Parey, Nandita Narokey, Parmitar Ekdin, Nirontar, Hirak Rajar Deshey, Nishijapan, Hajar Bachar Dhorey, Jibon Thekey Neya etc.


American novelist visits Presidency University

The Creative Writing Course at Presidency University was honored to receive a special lecture and question and answer period with the distinguished American novelist, Ms. Nell Freudenberger. Ms. Freudenberger's collection of short stories Lucky Girls, won the Pen/Faulkner Malamud award for short fiction and the Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her stories have been published in the New Yorker, The Paris Review, Granta, and The Best American Short Stories of 2004. Her first novel, The Dissident, was published in 2006.

The Creative Writing Course is the second of a series of special writing seminars being sponsored by Presidency University. The series is being taught by visiting professor, Dr. Patrick T. Dougherty of the University of Hyogo, Himeji, Japan. Students in the course series have had their work published internationally in Deshi Dreams, Wayward Bride Press, of Vancouver, Canada. A book launch for Deshi Dreams is scheduled for 4:00 pm, Sunday, March 4, 2007, in the Aman Lecture Hall of President University.


Discussion at Management Department, CU

A free discussion on 'Consciousness of 21st February and Globalization' was held in Management Studies Department, Chittagong University on 25 February.

It was arranged by the Management Debating Club (MDC). Prof. Anawarul Azim Arif, former Pro-Vice chancellor of Chittagong University was chief guest and Prof.Dr.A.F.M.Ashraf Ali was special guest while Prof.Dr.M.A.Taher, chairman of the department was in the chair.

On behalf of the students Sabrina Khanam (first year), Jesi (2nd tear), Nazrul Islam (3rd year), Sorfuddin Rashed (4th year), Nur-e-Rimpa (MBA-Human Resource Management), Rana ( MBA-International Management), CUDS president Tazul Islam, MDC Secretary M.U.Ratan, MDC President M.A.Samad Hemal talked on the occasion. On behalf of the teachers, lecturer MD.Abul Basar, Assistant Prof. Harisur Rahman Hawlader, Mr. Monowar Hossain, Dr.Zahrul Alam, Associate Prof.Abu MD.Atiqur Rahman, Prof. Dr. A.F.M.Arawngzab, Prof. Dr. Abdullah Mamun, Prof. Dr. Zahed Hussain Sikder delivered their speech.

At the end of the free discussion a parliamentary debate competition and cultural function was held with the participation of the students of the department.

Reception and fare well of EEE students in RUET

The 4th year students of EEE dept (2002 series) of RUET were given farewell by the department. I can exactly remember the day, it was 30th March 2003, when we had started our RUET life. At the very beginning this life seemed to us unbearable due to lots of class tests, assignments, practical and series of exams. Now, it's time to leave this campus. But many memories of RUET will stay with us forever.

In the farewell ceremony RUET Vice Chancellor A.F.M Anowarul Haque wished the students a bright future. Our department Head Prof. Mirza Golam Rabbani also wished us every success in his speech.

In the same ceremony, newcomers of RUET family (2006 series of EEE & ETE) were given warm and cordial welcome. At the end of the function a delicious dinner was served and with that our RUET life formally came to an end.

Athletics Competition at RU

Two-day long Inter College Athletics Competition' 2006-07 of Rajshahi University (RU) was held at (RU) Stadium. Mudar Bux Hall (Male) and Taposy Rabeya Hall (Female) became champions. Mudar Bux Hall created a new record as champions for seven years successively. Total 15 (11 male and 4 female) residential halls participated where 84 athletes competed for 29 events. The competition was drawn to a close by RU Vice Chancellor Prof. M A Altaf Hossain.


9th SAMF Conference emphasizes on creation of tomorrow's business leaders

The closing ceremony of 9th South Asian Management Forum (SAMF) was held on 25 February 2007 at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel. The Forum was organized by the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA) and hosted by North South University (NSU) in collaboration with Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI). Mr Tapan Chowdhury, Advisor to the Caretaker Government, Ministries of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Food, Disaster Management and Relief, Science and ICT, and Youth and Sports was present at the event as Chief Guest. The ceremony was presided over by Dr. Syed Zahoor Hassan, Vice Chancellor of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and President of AMDISA. Dr M Shamsul Haque, Vice Chancellor of Northern University, Bangladesh presented the keynote paper on "Corruption, Business and the Role of Business Schools" in a plenary session at the closing ceremony. Southeast University Observed Amar Ekushey

Southeast University observed Amar Ekushey or International Mother Language Day with great enthusiasm. In the morning Professor M. Muinuddin Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor and former Adviser of Caretaker Government, Md. Aftabuddin Khan, Registrar, AKM Amir Hossain Miah, Deputy Registrar, Group Captain Md. Shafiullah, Assistant Professor, BBA, Md. Asuduzzaman, Assistant Professor in Law, Md. Shah Alom, Lecturer in Islamic Studies, Ms. Afroza Bilkis, Lecturer in Law Department of Southeast University paid tribute by placing floral wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar.


Orientation Ceremony at NU Bangladesh

Vice-Chancellor of Northern University Bangladesh Professor Dr M Shamsul Haque stressed the need for introducing the education based on reality to face the global perspectives.

Professor Dr. M Shamsul Haque was speaking as chief guest at the Orientation Ceremony of all faculties of the Northern University Bangladesh (NUB) at the Auditorium of Bangladesh Institute of Administration and Management (BIAM) at Eskaton in the city this morning..

Presided over by M Abu Bakar Siddique, Treasurer of Northern University of Bangladesh (NUB), the function was addressed among others by Md Yeasin Ali, Managing Director of Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited, M Solaiman Miah, Registrar of UNB, Professor Dr M Azhar Uddin, Dean of Faculty of Business, Professor Dr M Nurul Islam, Dean of Science Faculty, Professor Dr M Abdur Razzaque of Business Faculty, Professor Dr Sadruddin Ahmed, Dean of Arts Faculty, M Lutfor Rahman, Director of Human Resources Division of UNB.


Silver Jubilee of RU marketing Department

The marketing department of Rajshahi University is set to celebrate the silver Jubilee (25 years) of the department on March 10. Around 1,500 current and former students of the department have already been registered to join the celebration. The department authorities have taken adequate preparation to hold the function amidst massive enthusiasm.

Rajshahi University Marketing Alumni Association will start its journey through the silver jubilee. Department chair professor Selim Reza told this at a news conference held last week. This department had started its journey in 1981 and it implemented some praiseworthy initiatives for offering quality education in the field. The steps were - make the department free from session jam, holding regular classes and examinations, introduce English as means of education, multimedia-based teaching in the class rooms, run laboratory and research education.
