Get a life!

Saushan Rahman

This incident happened two weeks ago. I awoke to the sound of my cell phone at 2 in the morning. In response to my groggy hello, the voice on the other side said, "Good morning, how are you?" I was puzzled. Was that some kind of a joke? Apparently it was. I recognized the voice. The caller had been bothering me for quite sometime, with the persistence of chewing gum on a nylon skirt. No manner of insults seemed to penetrate his thick skull and convince him to leave me alone. Suddenly my cell phone, which used to be my portal to the outer world, had become a source of annoyance. I doubt that I'm the only victim of such harassment. Prank calls are a common menace, and have been around since phones became a common fixture at home. Ever since the cell phones quit being a luxury and became an 'essential' good, the pranks have increased in frequency. These stupid, irritating phone calls call for desperate measures; some are forced to change their phone number, where as some keep their cell phone turned off.

I wonder what possesses people to do something like that. I believe that this sort of people do not have anything to do all day, and are so bored of their unproductive lives, they need to bother others to exact some meaning for their pathetic existence. What they don't realize is that not everyone sits idle at home. Unbeknownst to them, some people actually have work to do. So while they're getting a kick out of being annoying, it's nothing but an irritation for those on the receiving end.

Furthermore, what is the point in spending money when one gets rebuked and insulted for making all those phone calls? I know that the telecom companies are always coming up with new offers and reduced charges, but that cannot be the incentives for engaging in such harassment. I can only conclude that they are wasting their parents' money. Seems to me the attitude is, "Hey, my parents are paying for my cell phone, so why should I bother about the bills? I can call whomever I want and whenever I want. Bills are not my headache."

Prank calls might be fun for callers who need more things to fill up their days, but in reality it is nothing like that. And since the rebuke and insults do not seem to have any impact on them, this only means that these callers need a head check. This goes out to all the prank callers…get a life!
