A day of endless fun at CU
English Department

Omar Gias

8th May was a day of colorful and funny activities in and around the English Department of Chittagong University. The freshers' Reception and farewell program of the department was held on that day at the gallery of Arts Faculty. Some 600 students attended the program. The chief guest of the program was Dean of the Arts Faculty Professor Monsur Uddin Ahamed. Chairman of the English department professor Tapan Jyatri Borua presided over the program. Other professors of the department were also present on the occasion.

From the morning, every student seemed extremely excited and tensed at the same time. The entire faculty and premises wore a festive look. The gallery was beautifully decorated. Gradually, the gallery was filled with students. Finally at 10.30 am the program started with the recitations from the Holy Quran, Gita, Tripitak and Bible. The Program was divided into two sessions. The 1st session included floral reception, speech and felicitations. Professor Mohit Ul Alam gave the welcoming speech. The chief guest in his speech highlighted the importance of English literature and language in building the future career of the students. All the teachers in their speech reminded the outgoing students of their good future when they will be able to pursue higher education, and how it will be then imperative on them to give something back to society. They thanked the students for their hard work, and commented that they had had experienced a life-changing four years in the department. The freshers were informed about the rules and regulations related to studies at the department by professor Tapan Jyatri Borua.

On behalf of the outgoing students one student remarked that the feeling of that day was simply enough to offset the exhaustion of four years of hard work. They were proud to be students of the English Department of Chittagong University. The newly admitted students also spoke about their feelings regarding the academic atmosphere of the department. The 1st session ended around noon. Meanwhile, the students helped themselves with launch only to gear themselves up for the cultural session starting soon after launch

The cultural session was a huge success as there were many events full of fun and amusements. There were comedy shows, folk songs, solo songs, duet songs, English songs, jary gaan, recitations from Bangla and English poems and band show, performed by the department students. Teachers and students danced with the music. At the end of the program not only the old but also the new students felt sad as they felt how great their life in the campus was and the extent to which they will miss it when they will not be here.

The day was pretty memorable for everyone. The following students played the key role in making the program a success though they did not have any prior experience in undertaking such a big program : Emon, Sumanky, Tania, Sumi, Nahid Sultana, Nurul Ameen Molla, Polash, Hossain, Shadhat, Tanju, Shanjida Sharmin Moushumi, Omar Gias, Mithu, Roton, Shafin, Panna and Liza. I would like to take the opportunity to thank professor Mohit Ul Alam, professor Kamal Uddin Ahmed, professor Mainul Hasan Chowdhury, teacher Mahi-Nur Qudsi and teacher Mehrib, for all the help and support we get from them in arranging the program. We will be eagerly waiting for next year for some more unlimited fun!!
