Seminar at Geology Department organized by AAPG student chapter

Md. Baharul Alam Biswas

A seminar on “Presentation by MS (2002) students on their thesis” was held at the auditorium of Geology Department, University of Dhaka on 10th may, 2007. The AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) student chapter of Dhaka University organized the seminar as a part of their regular activities. Four MS (2002) students of Geology Department presented their thesis on their own field. All of them have secured first class in their MS degree. The presentation featured the various aspects of Hydrological and Environmental issues. The session was presided over by the Prof. Hussain Monsur, Chairman, Department of Geology, DU. Prof. Badrul Imam, Prof. Humayan Akhter and Md. Aziz Hasan, Associate professor enriched the program with their valuable presence. Students of Geology Department attended the seminar.

Mst. Anarkoli presented her speech on “Hydrogeology of deep aquifer in Singair Upazila, Manikganj”. She shown in her thesis that the deep aquifer of the study area is still safe for drinking usage but the shallow aquifer is contaminated by Arsenic (0-500 micro gm/litre) while the present drinking water standard adopted in Bangladesh is 50 microgram/litre of arsenic.

Md. Abdullah Al Masud presented his thesis entitled “Remote sensing and GIS based urban area delineation on Geological units of Chittagong City area, Bangladesh”. In his research, he focused on this point that the geological map units based urbanization mapping could be used effectively for the vulnerability and risk study of different potential geo-hazards like, landslides, water logging and flash flood in the city area. Md. Broddudduza Miah presented on “Monitoring surface water distribution and mapping, landuse, landcover using satellite imageries within gas exploration block VII, Bangladesh”.

Finally Md. Tareq Chowdury presented his thesis on “Arsenic in groundwater of Manikganj pauroshava: preliminary assessment of bioremediation”. He got the opportunity to work with a research team of Auburn University, USA. He said “Though arsenic is being a very old chapter in Bangladesh but we gave much attention to protect rather than mitigate arsenic problem. So, Bioremediation could be an ideal pathway towards that pathway as world is running fast with it”. Alongside, his speech brought out a new dimension in thinking about the implementation of molasses for arsenic remediation among the students. Mr. Chowdury also hoped that such program should be arranged in the department on a regular basis so that undergraduate students may have an idea about the research work that is going on in graduate level.

AAPG student chapter of Dhaka University has been launched on July, 2006. This chapter is sponsored by Chevron Bangladesh and coordinated by Dr. A.H.M Shamsuddin, Chief Exploration Geologist of Chevron Bangladesh. Dr. Khalid Hasan, Associate Professor, Geology Department, DU supervises the activities of Dhaka university AAPG student Chapter. Md. Baharul Alam Biswas, MS student is the president of the AAPG student chapter. The AAPG student chapter of Dhaka University is planning to arrange more programs regarding Geoscience in future.
